The Benator had Francis A. Walker
and Frederick Law Olmstuad with
him In California Ibis summer looking
over tho ground and is now engaged
with them in the preparation of plans
for the buildings that are to be erected
lor the accommodation of tho univer-
sity. Everything will b3 fino as
money aim experience can make it
and t'ho institution will be the most
liberally endowed of uny in the world.
It is t lie intention of Mr. Stnnfoid to
gather under the title ot tho Lelnnd
Stanford university a group of thir-
teen or more collo.'es whero all tho
liberal as well as the useful arts and
sciences will be taught to both young
men and young women and where the
most ample opportunities will be af-
forded advanced students for re-
search and investigation. The chairs
ot instruction will be filled with eur-
nest ambitions and progressive
young men who will have nil the fa-
cilties for study and investigation at
their command and who will not be
embarrassed by too muny duties or
weighed down by the necessity of
teaching for their sustenance. They
will be liberally paid and encouraged to
win reputation for themselves as well
ns for t he institution that fosters them.
According to the plan submitted and
now under consideration the univer-
sity is to bo divided into twelve col-
leges as follows: 1 administration; 2
chemistry; 3 mechanical engineering;
4 the mechanic arts; 6 civil engineer-
ing; 0 physics and electricity; 7 lan-
guage and literature; 8 geology and
mineralogy; 0 history and political
science; 10 biology; 11 industrial de-
sign; 12 architecture.
Each department is to have its own
building and its own working collec-
tions of books nnd apparatus and
there are to be in addition a library
museum laboratory reading room
art gallery and gymnasium in sepa-
rate buildings. There is to bo a chapel
for devotional exercisos and religious
instruction. As' there is plenty of
ground the plan is to mnke each of
the fifteen or sixteen buildings that
nie contemplated only one story in
height lighted by roofs of glass tiles.
The buildings will be of massive rough
stone of picturesque designs and con-
nected by arcades some being 110
Bomo t'O nnd the rest 70 feet long.
All will have a width of 50 feet and
will be of different heights according
to the purpose for which they are in-
tended ami tho taste of thp architect.
They are to belaid out orignally for
the accommodation of f00 students
but will bo so arranged that they can
be extended to accommodate 1500.
The cottage sj stem of dormitories is
proposed each cottage being arranged
lor the occupancy of twenty or twenty-
live students and they are to be scat-
tered through the park like a village.
Mr. Stanford takes the most absorb-
ing interest in all tho plans and prep-
arations nnd his endeavor is to secure
the greatest good to the greatest nura
her possible.

contains the following paragraph:
Maiuiikd On November 20 by the Rev.
Dr. Tiirnhiill (ieorue A. Dunnim ot Louis-
iana to Ming Alii-e I.cmon ot Washington
I). V.
This marriage is tho sequel to an
nnusunlly ra man tic story. George
Dawson a young captain in the con-
federate at my lay seriously injured in
1804 a prisoner of war in the United
States hospital at Indianapolis. One
of the ladies who visited the hospital
frequently and ministered alike to the
wenrers of the blue and the gray was
a Mrs. Lemon the wealthy widow of
a Union oflicer. In these visits Mrs.
Lemon was usually ncconipanied by
hjr daughter Alice then a little miss
ot ten yertrs. A fust friendshipsprung
.up between the youni! confederate ana
the little Union girl which continued
some months until the former was ex-
changed and sent back to his regi-
iiient. Seven years ago Mrs. Ixmion died
and Miss Alice through the efforts of
her Republican friends secured a
clerkship in one of the departments
here. Her health gradually failed
and last October she resigned her posi-
tion and went West to reside with rel-
atives. The announcement of her res-
ignation was printed in one of the
New Orleans papers where it met the
eye of Cnpt. Dawson now a dignified
bachelor of middle age and one of the
richest iilanterson the lower Missis-
sippi (.'apt. Dawson immediately
wrote Miss Iemon and nskvd her if
she was his little sweetheart of former
years and it so by what caprice of
ortnne she had been thrown upon her
own resources. Miss Icmon unsweted
the captain detailing their finan-
cial losses nt the time of the
Jay Cooke failure nnd the
subsequent death of her mother.
I 'apt. Dawson thereupon mailed the
lady a check for $1000 which he
begged In r to accept as a slight recom-
jmmiso for her mother's kindness to
Jiim while n prisoner of war. Miss
liemon returned the check saying
that under no circumstances could
she receive it.
Cnpt. Dawson then came north to
ee it he could not personally prevail
upon the lady to ncccjit his Resistance.
He went to Indiana intending tostop
only a couple of days but he remain-
ed a month and when' he returned
he tarried with him a northern bride
to crace his southern home.
