impovtnnt Pacific ports will bo

lntitudo thnt winter will novcr
Jmpodo travel upon it. In tho
nnnual report to tho company pre-
sented in May lost tho President
of thiB rond Col. T. A. Scott spoke
of its prospects nnd oftho nccoBBi-
ty for such a routo in tho follow-
Jnp torms :
The experience oftho past win-
ter has Bhown clearly tho necessity
for a route to and from the Pacific
const thai will be fi co from snow

prowwg trade ot our country wiin
Mexico and tho counties oftho East
ns well as tho local resources oftho
territory which tho rond will trn

Tho heavy eraiprntion that ' has
passed in Texas since the war will
doubtless increnso with the exten-
sion of railways nnd with tho fa
cilities afforded by them lor ship
mont of grain cotton cnttlo nnd
other products all of which muBt
furnish within a limited period a

you add to all tneso sources 01 irai-

to exist in exhaustions quantities
in the country to bo traversed by
tho roads or tho uo. it is oniy a
ouestion of time as to your socur
ing liberal rewards lor tho invest-

you will also provide tor tuo worm
nt large another valuable medium
for tho movements of commerce"
It would not bo easy to overes-
timate tho mineral resources of t he
region which will bo tributary to
the projected road. From tho bow-
els of tho earth will bo brought
forth ores which most probably
would mako a railroad profitablo
if agriculture furnished nothing
nd tho great peaceful sea beyond
yiolded none of its treasures.
Prof. Agaseiz returning from
bis south sea expedition landed nt
San Diego and a letter from a
member oftho expedition express-
ed the warmest admiration oftho
placo. Tho following is an extract:
"A great deal of the land in tho

worked and waited patiently for
years in tho belief that at somotimo

of our Asiatic commerce would de-

. Bomowhore in the 1300 miles bo-
tweon San Francisco and Mazntlan.
The claims of San Diego to occupy
this position aro undoubtedly pre-
eminent. The harbor is" one of the
finest and most secure in the world
And will accommodate with case a
fleet of 1000 ships. The surround-
ing country though suffering at
the time of our visit from the ef-
fects of a protected drought gave
Ample evidenccB of its gront fertili-
ty when once supplied by irriga-
tion or otherwise with the requi-
site moisture. The climate is soft
mild yet invigorating nnd certain-
ly one of the best adapted in the
world for thoBO having pulmonary
utfectionB as it is almost uniform
throughout the entiro year and
would involve no wearisome chango
- of residence or dangerous traveling
from place to place. Tho site of
the town is an excellent ono tho
land sloping sufficiently for purpo-
ses of drainage bnt not bo much as
to necessitate grading. Altogether
it is far from improbable that San
Diego may become before many
years have passed

' on'this coast in size and commercial
importance and whatever our ex-
pectations in the matter may bo
- our wishes - aro certainly that the
little town and its kindly inhabi-
tants may have all tho success
which they desire."
Tho harbor of San 'Diesro has
long been known ; but the Tack of
population in tno vicinity has
caused its commercial importance to
be overlooked and even f now it
would not attract unusual atten-
tion but for tho fact that it so ad-
mirably meets the want of the
Texas and Pacific Railroad Compa-
ny. It was surveyed by the su-
perintendent of the United States
coast survey' in 1851-2; and the
engineer appointed to survey a
route for the Southern Pacific Kail-
road" on the 32d parallel in 1856
speaks thus of it: S
"To spoak of the accessibility
and safety of tho harbor of San
Diego would be superfluous for its
fame in that respect is well estab-
lished as the discovery of Califor-
nia. In 1782 it was sur-
veyed by Don Juan Pantoja sec-
cond pilot or navigator of the Span-
ish fleet. In tho summer of 1840
the shore lino a was ccorately meas-
ured and triangulated undor the
direction of Hon. John B. Weller
United States Commissioner in
connection with Initial Point of
the Mexican boundary; and in the
spring of 1850 while encampod
there waiting instructions from
Washington I sounded the harbor
thoroughly and in' conjunction
with 7 the officers of the United
States steamer Massachusetts ex-
tended the soundings into deep
water. Since then large steam-
ships and men-of-war have anch-
ored off the military depot in six
fathoms fonrmiles above the Playa.
The avorage rise and fall of tide

Tho rocont visit of tho Directors
oftho Texas nnd Pacifio Road to
San Francisco and San Diego to.
pother with tho prospect of the
spoedy construction ot tne roaa
has alarmed and stimulated the
San Franciscans to snch n degree
as to mako it probable that the
Atlnntio nnd Pacifio Iioad on the
30th parallel will bo pushed on
with much vitror: and thnt in a few
yenrs wo shall havo two new roads

and tho "While Mountains now are ;
and we may hope that tho timo is
not far distant when a passage
over tho broad bosom oftho Pacific
will be moro common than one
across tho continent is now.
In tho meantime tho onterpris
ing man of business and the
shrowd capitalist will not bo slow
to look after the rich gains which
will como Irom Moxican alines

distant islands of tho Antipodal
seas. Our planet yet has scope ior
operations on a pretty largo scalo ;
and "mines of wealth" will be
brought to this country from the
"uttermost parts ol tne eartii.

From the speculations as to the
probablo territorial extension of
the United Statos it may do possi-
ble that tho troops will flood the
country south so as to be on hand
or close by in case of an emergen-
cy. The "territorial extension" may

It has bcon said that for the good
