In the ceutral portion of the ground

In Now York the Republicans have a

question of who shall be senator will be
oasily determined. In that event pres-

for a number of stalwarts to coalesce

not appear now to bo probable but then
no one can predict assuredly of what

will keep in close seclusion locking
niiiisell'iu a room to study; another will
study his part anywhere aud at any
lime and it is not by any means an un-
cuiinnou occurrence for a Tnespian
iu be memorizing his lines while
he is talking to a friend. The late
Chailes Thome used to boast of the facl
of having studied some of his host parts
while walking aloug the streot. There
is a general impression tout Shake-
spoare is ttillicuU to commit to memory
whereas he is far eusior than many
other authors for there Is a musical
rlivtlmi in his lanicuage that Is easily
fixed upon tho recollection. Among tho
comparatively modern uutliors liulwer
is far more difficult tu memorize but
there is no dramatic writer whose sro as
hard to memorize as those of Knowlos
for his blank verse beautiful as it is is
so cramped that old aud experienced ac-
tors dread to study it. Actors have bv
constant uso of the memory accom
plished some strango feats. Some
twenty years ago Mr. John Rydor

thr ughout four long acts without
hardly any intermisslou.oominitted the
character perfectly to memory in
twenty four hours or to make use of his
own words after the first night "I swal-
lowed the whole doso and dont think I
spilled a drop." When the curtain rose
on the first production of "Pizarro" the
last act of the drama was not written
and Brinsley Sheridan wrote off tho
fifth act In 'the gieon-rooni the call
noy taking it from him and then
distributing it t' the different
actors as tho first four acts wore being
played to be studied by them as best
tlio'y could. The exercise of the think-
incpnwers bv members of the profes-
sion is at times something wonderful
and it provos how that organ like anv
other can be trained and be relied upon.
It happens at times that an actor Is
called upon to enact a part at a very
short notice and a charactor he is totally
unacquainted wi'h.and perhaps ignor-
ant of the very setiBO of the play itself.
Not long ago in one of the up-town
theatres in this city an actor was
brought to thethoatre at 7:30 at night to
take tho plnoe of a brother professional
who was sick. Ho knew nothing of the
piece und had never seen it for it was
a now one from London. He arrived
at tho theatre a few minutes only
before the play would begin and ho had
to appear in one of the leading roles.
IDs only opportunity to commit the
language to memory wasduritig tho in-
tervals ho was off the stage. Yet that
night ho was what is professionally
known as "dead loiter perfect." Kvory
one knows that the memory will at
times be treachorons and no man leels
tliis more keenly than the actor. To be
standing before a vast crowd of people
who are waiting to hear him say some-
thing and that something to desert him
is indeed painful. Some actors can take
the word quickly from a prompter. A
sign a motion from him will set him
right but there aie other old actors to
whom the prompter is of litt e use and
it is no infrequent occurrence for them
"to fish for words" or substitute lan-
guage of their own until thoy remember
i he words of the author. New York

in charging tho grand jury at Newark
Judge Depuo used those words:
I wish to crII your attention to the
maimer ofprocedure In the grand jury
room. It is not necessary that a formal
complaint should be made to the grand
jury or to a magistrate to give thorn ju-
risdiction or that any person should ap-
pear to make a formiilcoinplaiiit. If
nnr gentleman on tup grsnd jury knows
of the commission of a crime either on
his own information or common rumor
the grand jury can mako au investiga-
tion. Huob information is sutllcient to
give the urrand jury information.
The law on this point is the samo in
New York as in New Jersey and the
above reminder would be as timely her
as it is there. The dilatoriness that has
niton boen npparetit in iudioti iir per-
sons whose crimes have become matters
of common notoriety suggests tho the-
ory that the grand jury goes ou the
principle of not moving in a case where
there is no formal complaint. .
