W raontionod last week bar
lag a et Senator Burgos on the train
and meant to hare called the atton
tionofonr poople to an important
suggestion he nude with respect to
the possible location of one of the
Normal schools at this place hereaf
ter. The subject as our reader are
probably awaro went over at tho lato
session of the Legislature but will
probably come np at the extra' ses
sion to be held most likely as Sena
tor Burgos informed us about a year
hence i or if not then at the next
session thereafter. In the moan time
Senator B.stated that the managers of
the Feabody fund in this State pro
pose holding Normal scuools at dif
f orent points and that Prof. HoHings-
wortb of the State Board of Educa-
tion wjuU hive considerable if not a
controling influonae in flxinj their lo
cation. .. Tho suggestion therefore is
that our loading citizens should so
far interest thomsolvas as to try to
to have a session of one of said Nor
mil sc'aools bold at this placo. Tho
Sonator thought if we would tender
the use of the Institute building for
that purpose we oould effect the de-
sired result Frof. Hollingsworth
being presumably partial to this place
or at any rate knowing it would be a
suitable one
Now the adtantagos to be gained
by holding a Normal school session
hero would be to put San Marcos
favorably before the educators and
and general public of the state as the
right place for the location of the per-
manent Normal school for western
Texas at the proper timo. It would
place her in direct liue of succession
as it were and greatly enhance her
prospects of ultimate success. As it
is proposed to noia tue .Normal
school sessions' during the vacation
of the regular schools there conld be
no conflict iu giving the use of the
Institute buildings. We fully concur
with Senator Burgoi that this is
very important subjoct We commend
it to the consideration of the trustees
of our schools the lessees of the Insti
tute our County Judge and leading
citizens generally and suggest that
correspondence be opened forthwith
with Prof. Hollingsworth on the sub
ject Aside from the advantages ol
ready indicated the presence of a
large body of prominont educators
for several weeks or months could
not fail of giving an impetus to the
cause of education among us besides
disseminating a general -wholesome
influence.
Bbaducoh has been re-elected from
Northampton the vote standing
For Bradlaugh 8378 ; for Corbctt
the Conservative candidate 3253.
The constituencies of Northampton
have given their verdict very plainly
on the question of whether the mem-
ber should be unseated bocause of
his refusal to swear while willing to
affirm.

Manufacturing would proceed much
more rapidly at the South if machine
ry could be had at reasonable prices.
The South is hampered by taxes for
everything and her only salvation is
to induce manufacturers to come in
her midst and work up the raw ma-
terial The tables of exports of man-
tores from the United States and
Great Britain are aadly dispropor-
tionad in 1879 the United States
exporting $10987668 while England
sent oat $239390000. In 1880 the
U. & exported $lL28MHud Eng-
land $318800000. To counteract this
unbalanced aeeoant factories must be
established in the heart of the eotton
tagion and foundries fur machinery.
XsitbeT tbs United States nor the
South will be independent while the
rasovoss of tho South are so lilUe
ooTftlopad.

rroaidont Oarfield was so much
frightened at the irruption of office
seekers early in March that he adopt'
ed varions expedients to reduce the
number. Mrs. Oarfiold has also found
it necessary to pnt a limit to the free
dom of late characterizing While
House receptions. Aud the ladies of
the Cabinet after consideration have
decided that thoy will bo unable to
return calls. All thtse things show
that the country is growing and that
Washington is becoming a populous
city instead of a struggling village.
Twenty poople come hero for office
to see the sights or to spend a sea
son where one canio pnor to 1HGO.
There is also a stvody gain in the
permanent population of tho city es-
pecially of the best class of citizens.
The negro invasion commenced in
18G1 and kept np through war lost
force after 1865 but was streugthuu
ed in 18712 and 3 wbilo Shepherd
was spending "a million a ruinuto'
street improvements. It has ceased
now and under the influence of good
treatment good schools and good
wages the bulk of the colored peo
pie are becoming reputable citizens.
The future of the city is as much as
sured as that of the country and I
believe the time is not far off when
Washington will be the groat pleas
ure and health resort of the country
The death rate among its white resi
dents is less than that of any other
city of oqnal population.
There baa been absolutely no pro
gress in business at tbs senate du
ring the post week. The Republican
Senators are very very anxious to
proceed to executive business but
won't do it They still insist on first
electing three or four officers of the
Senate. They remind me of the
barefooted boy who when askodby
his father one winter tiny what he
wanted said he wanted a pair of shoes
but he must have a bosom pin. It is
as certain as fate that our Republican
brethren will go without the jewelry
until Doccmbor at least unless they
accept the Rhocs first. Thore is not
one Democratic Senator who will yield.
as mo iiepuwican administration is
placed in a ridiculous and damaging
position by the dead lock it is proba
ble some of the Republican Senators
will be influenced to break it The
President or Secretary Blaine could
do so in an hour.
Senator Conkling is in New York
accompanied by Senator Jones of
Nevada a devoted personal friend at
tempting to secure innuence unfavor
able to the confirmation of Robertson
as collector of tho port of New York.
It is a mild statement of the truth to
say that the quarrel between tho ad
ministration and the New York Sen-
ator attracts more attention here
though it has not reached tho stage
of benatorml discussion yet than did
any quarrel Mr. Hayes ever forced
upon the party. For various reasons
the party leaders were against Kayos
without much regard for the merits
of Mr. Conkling's compliments. Sev-
eral Democratic Senators then aided
Mr. Conkling. Now the situation in
both these respects is changed. The
leaders are not with Conkling and I
don't believe a single Democrat will
vote against any nomination so far
made by Oarfield except those of
Stanley Mathews and William E.
Chandler. Dem
said his punishment was just. Near
ly 4000 poople witnessed the exe
cution.
Over 40000 people are homeless
and destitute from tho earthquake at
Ohio. Thirty vilages wire almost de-
stroyed I Castro the chief town is a
moss of rubbish. Hundreds of corpses
oro still under the ruins oud a pluguv
is feared.
Oscar Lafayette son of George
Washington Lifvetta and grandson
of tho twin whom America Las long
delighted to honor died recently in
Franco.

The New York Texas and Mexican
Railway Company has secured ground
at Rosenberg Juuction which is tho
intersecting point of nlo Sunset rood
and the Santa Fo railway three miles
northwest of Richmond in Ft Bend
countv. At tins point the railway is
to begin its conno towards the Rio
Grande tho initial points being Whar-
ton Victoria Goliad Ilecvillo and
Brownsville Surveys have been made
from Rosenberg Junction to Victoria
and tho line bus been located to Whar-
ton and the right-of-way secured to
the Colorado river and the contract
let for all the line from Rosenberg to
Wharton. The survey from Whar-
ton to Victoria is preliminary ; but
tho work of location will soon begin
snd the lino will be pushed rapidly
towards the west It is said that this
company is looking for a line to the
const snd whether it will fro to Tres-
pelooios or Mttagordn B.vy or the
mouth of the Brn.os is hard to toll
but there is every evidence of .great
activity in railroad building in this
rich sugar And cotton region. It is
understood that persons in this city
have secured the contract for grading
between Rosenberg and Wharton. .
