tlemau we must express our gratification
at his favorable opiuiou. Hut we wonder
what our Qaaker friends of eastern Iudiauu
would think of the military title he has so
libendly but gratuitously bestowed upou us Tt
We find Southern liberality most unbound
ed iu this respect we are sometiuios made
to out-rauk veterans of all the recent wars.
Our friend Maj. McKie for instance al-
ways addresses us us -General. ' We thought
for some time he was poking fun at us but he
afterwards explained tliat he had formerly
kuowu a General Julian in Mississippi we
believe and hence naturally applied the title
to us. Handsome way of getting out of it

But to return to Col. Bowers and the Press
Convention. One of the nicest features
about such conventions is that th'ey tend to
remove wrong personal impressions aud
prejudices among the members. As a gen-
eral rule we think the members like each
other much better on actual personal meet-
ing than they would be apt to do merely by
a newspaper acquaintance so to speak. And
this is not the least of the benefits of
Press Associations.
Malone's New ArTjingcuients.
We referred briefly List week to some
changes which were about being made in
Malone's store-room and to the extension
of their business by the contemplated estab-
lishment of a branch store at Lampasas.
Their arraugemuts are now perfected and
it is proper that we should say something
further on the subject.
By the new arrangements in the store
room here the retail dry goods department
is concentrated to the left-hand of the parti-
tion so as to make it much more convenient.
On the other side of the partition the office
has been brought ty the front instead of the
rear as formerly and the rest of the space
will be devoted to storing duplicates of their
immense stock. The eutire change strikes
us as being a great improvement
The store at Lampasas will open about
the 10th inst and will be in charge of Mr.
J. M. Maloue a gentleman admirably well
fitted by experience sound judgment and
high character for the position. Lampasas
is now in the full tide of a railroad boom
which promises to be of long duration so
the prospects of Malones doing a remunera-
tive business there are first rate.
Mr. Geo. T. Malone will continue at the
head of ihe establishment here which will
be kept up to its present high mark of busi-
ness success and for the good of the public
as well as that of the proprietor.

Thanks to Mrs. J. M. Malone for a

had some 40 or SO roses on it in bloom with
about three times as many buds.
Hon. TFells Thompson was in town on
yesterday and called on us. His announce-
ment ns a candidate for Congress will be
found in the proper place.
Our venerable neighbor and contempora-
ry Mr. O' Kelly has been presented by his
"better half with a bouncing boy. The
old adage is "Old men for counsel" but
here in Texas they appear to be good for some
departments of action as well. We congrat-
ulate him.
MrR. Gentrv has returned from her stay
of nearly a year at Kerrville in improved

business and pleasure combined.
At San Antonio on Mouday we called on

still in business as watch maker etc. and we
were glad to learn is doing very well We
are sure he deserves success.
Some of the Texas editors who went to
California called on Col. Jack Hays at his
residence in Oakland. They represent him
as in feeble health but vigorous in mind
and spirit
Col. Whitehead of Laredo candidate for
Attorney General made us a pleasant call
on Saturday and also addressed our people
at the court room. We learn he is a good
lawyer and well qualified for the position.
He was clerk of the Senate in our last legis-
lature. As yet he has no opponent We
learn he made a favorable impression here.
We believe we heard the other day r the
voice of our fair and vivacious Austin friend
Miss Oxie Clifton one of the bright partic-
ular stars of the corps of teachers of that
city. Why comes she thus early is the
question ? for hitherto she has only been
consider "due" at vacation. Have the
school vacations been hastened so as to be
on a par with the other crops ? Truly we
think they should be cut off about a month
at each end in this warm climate ; it would
be better both for teachers and pupils.
A pleasant local reminiscence is connect-
ed with the fine poem on our first page
"The Organ of St. Mary's" whieh we hap-
pened on in a Dallas exchange. The fan-
author. Miss Ona Hollingsworth will be re-
membered by not a few of our readers as
having spent about a year at thisplace and
vicinity several years since. She has resid-
ed at her old home Richmond Indiana
nearly ever since where she has been en-
gaged in teaching music and in literary pur-
suits adding to her reputation as a writer
both in poetry and prose. We have some
reason to believe that she Btill holds our
country and those who were her friends
here in pleasant remembrance and it is not
improbable but she may yet return to our
more genial and salubrious clime.
