SECOND GENERATION
2. PETER2 FAYSSOUX (Daniel1 ) was born in 1745, probably in Charleston,
South Carolina. He served his apprenticeship in medicine under
his stepfather, Dr. James Hunter, and later finished his medical
education at Edinburgh University, graduating in 1769.(1)
In 1773 Dr. Peter Fayssoux was elected as Curator of the first
museum of natural history in America at Charleston, South Carolina.
He was one of the signers of the South Carolina Paper money
and served in the South Carolina legislature. He was a charter
member of the Society of the Cincinnati. 2)(3)
During the American Revolution he served as physician-surgeon and
was with Moultrie's forces until the surrender at Charleston,
South Carolina in 1780. As a prisoner he was sentenced to exile
in St. Augustine but was released and escaped the fate of the other
prisoners. After his exchange he joined Green's Army and was appointed
Chief Physician and Surgeon of the Hospital, Southern Department,
15 May 1781.(4)
Peter Fayssoux married first, Sarah Wilson, daughter of Algernoon
Wilson(57 and Sarah Pro r, 29th or 30th January 1772.(6)7) She
died in August, 1776. pV)() There was one daughter, Frances, born
to this marriage. She was said to have lived "under the blight of
a baffling disfigurement." She died, unmarried, 6 March 1797, in
Philadelphia, at the age of 23 years. (10)
He married second Mrs. Ann (Smith) Johnson, daughter of William
and Jane Smith, in March 1777. (11)(12) The exact number of children
fathered by Dr. Peter Fayssoux is unknown but it is believed
to be thirteen. Those known to have died in infancy or early
childhood were: William,Peter, Susan, Nancy, Benjamin and Mary.
His two eldest daughters seem to have suffered from a "leprous
affliction."(13) At the death of Peter Fayssoux, Sunday evening,
1 February 1795,(14) he was buried with his mother and "Hunter
Step-Kin" in the First (Scotch} Presbyterian Church Graveyard,
Charleston, South Carolina. (15 Ann died 11 March 1810 at the age
of 54 years.(16) Her will was proved 9 April 1810 in the Probate
Court, Charleston County, South Carolina, and recorded in Will
Book E-1807-1818, page 144.
