THE RAILROADS AND THE LEVEE.
What a Fromin nt Railroad Official
Thinks of the Proposition
A Herald reporter interviewed a
prominent railroad official this morn-
ing on the proposed building of a levee
by the jo nt efforts of the railroads
entering here. He did not want his
name used yet but it is sufficient to
say that he holds a high position with
j to get into the ciiy to come in over the
joiutly owned track that the company
i woulu build cn ttc levee. Ibis wouirt
give the railroads that built the levee
a chance to get buck some of the out
1 ly they baa made in building the
; levee. The proposition ol Mayor Ma
! offin is not yet clear eaough to ba act
i fd on by the railroad companies; in
! fast I fr one do r.oi kuow what are his
i railroads build the levee. Under cer
tain conanions the building of the
levee would be a payirg investment for
the railroads and would evenlua ly r.
suit in centralizing the railroad busi
ness to one section of the town but
without ihese c nlitiors to the railroads
the building ol the levee would bi
dead Joss and I see no reason why the
different com pan es should take action
in the matter. My idea is that the
b.'st plan would be for Mayor Mag' Bin
to announce nis plan and
then the railroad representatives could
meet and d scuss the feasibiility of the
plan aad form some combination by
wnicn tney couid work jointly in th
matter. 1 do not thin the railroad
will build a levee to proiect El Paso
frcm the flood waters of tha Iiio Gran
de unless there is some way for levee
to prove benefieisl to taem. By giving
them the right to build and operate
tracks on the levee allowing them to
build union depots for freight and pas
sengers aid refusing to grant future
franchises to new railroads the rail
roaus now nere could prooabiy ste
their way clear to build a levee and
maintain it at th ir own expense."

What Col. Badblood Thinks.
Col. Badblcod said this morn'ng to a
Herald reporter: 'T.me have
changed in Texas since the dsys of Ben
Thompson. Wes Hardin and John Sel-
man and other noted spirits of Texas
history. Formerly it was tbe custom
when a man wanted to kill anotbe" to
go out and give bis opponent a coup-i'
grace without further warning than the
sound of a pistol. Now it is different.
When some hot blooded Texan wants
to do up bis opponent he jumps in a
back and goes home after a shot gun or
a Winchester and returns to the Fcene
of action while his opponeot patiently
awaits his arrival smokine a cigar
wrong end foremost. Oa his arrival a
line of battle ia drawn up on each side
and then the police come along and
disarm the combatants. The next evo-
lution in wou!d-be killings will be tbat
the killer will get ihe McGinty band
and a squad of police to march in front
of the hack a-5 be moves onto his oppo-
nent. His opponent will patiently
await tbe arrival of his killer with the
oroner the'undertaker and his coffin
already picked out. To add to the
brilliancy of the affair be will have
time to go home and put on clean
clothes and pull off his boots and get a
shave. Oh! there is no more of the
good old days left to us" sighed Colo-
nel Bad blood as be walked away and
wiped a tear from his wicked eye.
The New Gold Fields.
BriVon Davis has just returned from
the Corralitos ranch and this morning
to a Herald reporter said that there
was no doubt about gold being dis
covered on tbe Corralitos property in
Mexico. Me said parties were workin
manv of he gulches in the Escondido
mountains and were taking out consid
erable gold. New dicoeri s had also
been made in the Paj -into mountains
west of Casas Grandes and also in the
Janos hills in the northwest corner of
the Cor-aMis land grant. The parties
are working quietly ar.d are cot telling
just bow much gold they are getting-
out tbat they are taking out sumcien
to pay is evident from the fact that
they continue their work. The work
is ail done by the placer process and
most of i". is by dry washers.
Mr. Davis says that Dr. Scovall and
a party went out from the Corralitos
ranch p-ospect'ng last Sunday with
pans aud returned with about fifty
c.ts worth of gold apiece for their
day's work. There is trold there and by
prospecting the country ls me only
way to ten just in what quantiv.es
can be found.

Berlin.
Berlin is almost as discouraging in
its otSer landmarks of its notable Ger

most as bid as New York where few
houses now stand tbat were in exist

were alive. London is rich in build
ings associated with great men and an

to be sure a few instances of memorial

notable Germans have lived but even
in these cases the bouses themselves
are an uninterested portion of an unin-
teresting street. The Prussian kings

reason why today the most beautiful
streets of Berlin furnish less interest
