VERY LITTLE DOING.
Tbe Southern Pacific Again Tied Up
On Account of High Water.
Train Crews Not Getting In Full
Time.
For the second time within the last
few weeks tbe Southern Pacific line
e&dt of here is tied up on account of a
flood.
In consequence of this there was only
one switch crew in the G. H. & S. A.
yards yesterday afternoon and the train
crews re making very poor time.
The flood of a few weeks ago cost the
Southern Pacific in the neighborhood of
$4000u0 and it is thought that the cost
of this washout will not fall far below
that amount.
Regarding the flood situation the
Denieon Herald has the following to
Bay:
I'nere is very little if any improve-
ment in the flood situation today. In
lad the M. K. & T. last night was in
the worst shape they have been in
since the trouble began. The Brazos
river rose yesterday evening about 5
o'clock higher than it has yet been
nd the gang of men that has been
watching the large iron bridge across
tbe stream were forced to abandon
their work of keeping the drift away
f -om the structure and flee for their
lives. The water rose on all sides
of them and out them
off and they were compelled to tear
down a section house near the north
end of tbe bridge and construct a raft
on which they managed to reach Sealy
about a half mile away. The water is
running over the top of the bridge and
now that the drift can no longer be
kept from striking it it is regarded as
almost certain to go. The dumps to
both approaches are under water and
no doubt are washed entirely away.
The bridge and a small plot of ground
where the telegraph office and section
house stood are the only points not
wider water for a radius of half a mile
in any direction.
The train service is about the same
all passengers being from one to four
hours late yesterday and No. 4 this
morning reached here at 6:15.
The H. & T. C. is at a standstill and
will remiin so until tbe flood recedes
sufficiently to enable them to begin re-
pairing. They are still running trains
back and fortn between here and Bre-
mond. and their wires are working as
far south ts Calvert.
Tbe Brazos river has risen over two
tftt since 7 o'clock this morning and
the iron bridge across the stream is
banging by a mere thread and is liable
to go bt any time. All tfforts to save
the jitruoture have been abandoned.
The M. K. & T has fought bard to
ave this bridjje and its loss will prove
teriuus one for them crippling them
for weeks as a new structure will have
to be erected to take its place and the
dumps and approaches to the same re-
built. ALL FIRED.
Superintendent Martin Acts
Promptly and Severely With
the Men Who Indulged in the
Fourth of Julv Fight.
The Fourth of J uh fight. in which
Beveral of tbe G. H. & S. A. employees
participated was investigated by Sup

A DIRECT KICK.
Special Officer Rayner Makes a
Complaint Against Some of the
City Officials For Turning a
Mexican Loose Who Had Been
Caught In the Act of Destroying
Company Property.
A few days ago a switch crew on the
O. H. & S. A. captured a Mexican in
the act of destroying a box car on tbe
link. They took him to the depot and
turned Mm over to Special Officer
Rayner.
The Mexican was locked up and
when he appeared in court and p!ead
guilty to the charge hewas fined $50
od costs. After remaining in jail for
a short time he was allowed to pass out
of the jail a free man.
In regard to the matter this morning
Mr. Rayner said: "If the city officials
are going to do that kind of business
what is tbe use of the railroad company
arresting a man for an offense of any

liberty to commit the same
offense tonight and in the event of a
repetition of bis nefarious work what
would be the use to arrest him? I
think the matter should be mentioned
and if possible right the wrong that
has been committed.. The railroad
company had been trying to capture
the men who bad been destroying cars
on the link for some time and now that
they have beed successful they are re-
warded by seeing the Mexican turned
loose to commit the same offense
again."
MUST MOVE.
The Chinamen Have a Week Left In
Which to Vacate the Eating
Houses Between Here and New
Orleans on the G. H. A-S. A- AH
But One Will Be Out By the 15th.
As stated in the HERALD several
weeks ago the Crescent News and Ho-
tel company will assume charge of all
the eating houses between here and
New Orleans on the G. H. & S. A. line
with the exception of one and that is
stationed at Valentine the k first divi-
sion east of here on that line. They
may take charge of it later on but for
the present they prefer to allow the
present management to hold on. . .
This move has been under contem-
plation for some time by the Crescent
company and they have been watching
their chance to take charge of tbe
property. This company has had
charge of the G. H. & S. A. eating
house at this point for some time past
and they have given perfect satisfac-
tion and it is to be regretted that they
are not going to take charge at Valen-
tine at once.
A SLIGHT WRECK.
It Occurred On the Texaa & Pacific
a Short Ways West Of Toyah
Texas.
The Texas & Passenger train due at
this point this morning at 9:15 will not
arrive until about 6 o'clock this even-
ing The cause of the delay is a freight
wreck west of Toyah early this morn-
ing. The freight was headed in west
and was traveling at a moderate
t-pced wren a box car loaded with
watermelon? jumped the track and
took another car with it.
A wrecker was sent from Big
Springs and track was cleared in a
comparatively short time.
All of the crew escaped without be-
ing injured.

Sparks From the Engine.
Ben E. McLeod is now chairman of
the Western Passenger association.
The railroad team will be on band
tomorrow to meet all comers. They
have a good team and claim they can
see victory in sight.
Two more big engines passed
through here yesterday for tbe Califor-
nia division of the Southern Pacific
and still there are more to follow.
The Santa Fe is doing a big business
In the passenger line at present. Train
loada of school teachers are being taken
from eastern points to Los Angeles.
F. Y. Thompson a brakeman on tbe
G. H. & S. A. who has been visiting
friends and relatives in Kentucky for
some time past has again reached El
Paso well pleased with his trip.
A tramp going through the G. H. &
S. A. yards yesterday afternoon with a
thermometer pinned on his shirt at-
tracted a great deal of attention. He
said that he wanted to know the tem-
perature of the atmosphere through
which he was traveling. The ther-
mometer registered 115 in the sue.
Engine No. 767 which did the
switching in the G. H. & S. A. yards
for so long a time and was finally sent
to Houston for repairs is expected to
arrive here possibly Monday and go on
the night work in the yards. There
are a few road engines at present tied

JUAREZ BULL FIGHT
Plenty Of Persons From This Side
the River Will Go Over.
No doubt a large crowd of persons
from thie side the river will attend the
bull fight at Juarez tomorrow to wit
ness tbe contest between tbe woman
matador and several sturdy young bulls
which she selected In Uamaiayuca
durinc tbe Dast week.
The Calderon brothers now have the
management of the ring and they will
endeavor to see that the sport is first
class.
Last Sunday's fight paid about $1400
Mexican the expenses being about
$900.
Dr. Alexander has said that he in
tended to fumigate those oarties from
this side who attend the fight but no
doubt many people will not be deterred
from witnessing it on that account.

from El Paso to Los Angeles and San
