The sale of the Dallas Fort Worth

a matter of rumor on the

In railroad circles it is believed that
deal if not consummated al

Rock Island trains will be running into
Dallas at no distant day; that the pur-

the deal i? 1250000. and that this
amount will formally change hands to

documents.
Mr. Connor declared however that
the renort was without foundation and
that ha could have disposed of the

desire. . .
The preliminary survey of the new
road has been completed and it was
announced vesterday that the perman

interstate traffic is concerned will be at
an end. Free transportation is to bs a
thing of the past. Letters have been
received here from the Southern Paci-
fic officials that other lines will pursue
the same course. .The Santa Fe's
mileage books were made to. expire on
Aug. 26 and it will not be necessary to
call them in.
Unle8 the interpretation now passed
upon the law is modified or unless the
legislators succeed in getting them-
selves appointed "assistant attorneys '
for the railroad companies they will
have the novel experience of paying
fare to and from Austin the next time
the law-making body is assembled. In
that eventDit has been suggested that
they will find it convenient to get
through their work in sixty days. -
In the past the lawmakers have been
able to trot back home every time they
felt like it free of cost and. as they
were thus able to keep on good terms
with their families and look after their
business affairs a little they am not
worry so much if the session was long-
drawn. But if they have to put up mo
ney for railroad fare every time tney
go home or take a side' exoursion they
will feel like hustling and adjourning
as early as possible. Ex.

brought before the railroad commission
after their recent neeision of certain
cases against the Louisville and Nash-

Men Wanted
Scarcity of laborers is reported by
railway contractors in California
Idaho Washington and other parts of
the country. The Southern Pacific
needs 600 or 700 more men on its coast
extension but can not get them and
on other western roads contractors are
offering free transportation and 82 a
day without getting enougn men.
There is no excuse for tramps in this
country row and yet the railways are
daily carrying thousands oi mem.

Pay Car To Be Discontinued
Notices have been published in the
different departments of the Cotton
Belt railroad company at
Texarkana Tex. to the effect
that on and after Sept. 1 1899 the pay
car will be discontinued and all em-
ployes paid off at their respective sta-
tions. The system existed fifteen years
ago when the road was a narrow
gauge and extended from Texarkana
to Waco. It was then a very popular
plan. Dallas News.
