THE DASHING CAVALRY
Driving Ahead Of the Main
Army Keeps the Boers
In Constant
Fear
London May 24. Lord Roberts
has apparently bo disposed his columns
that no position taken by the Boers on
the railroad Is tenable. The Rhenos-
ter position which Roberts reports has
' been evacuated was very favorable for
defense but the Boers feared the long
reaching oavalry arms which are
driving ahead of tbe main British
army on the left and right.
It is generally believed that with
this disposition of his troops Roberts
will reach the Vaal river in a few days
with no great opposition. There are
several streams crossing the railroad a
few miles south of the Vaal river and
It is possible that the Boer rear guard

serious.

In the Philadelphia
Convention
Philadelphia May 24. Accord-
ing to statements made here there
will be an unusual struggle in tbe com-
ing republican ' national convention.
This struggle will be the attempt by
members of tbe United States senate
to force tbe nomination of a senate
candidate for vice-president. This
movement is new in tbe political his-
tory of the country and a radlosl
change in the manner of nominating
candidates. The candidacy of Tim

SYSTEMATIC
Practiced By the (Hard) Times and the Daily
News
The boldness of the thievery practiced by the oher da'ly papers in
El Paso and of their endeavor to hood wink the pub"c is surprising.
The News is engaged in a most contemptible pract'cs that of ftealiog
dispatches by the column from eastern exchanges chinerlog tha date
and printing as telegrams. The (Hard) Times has fallen Into the News's
trap and reprints tbe twice stolen stuff from it? afiercoon contempora-
ry asa'n as telegraphic news.
These papers hare been engaged in this dishonest jobbery for many
weeks. Any body who reads a big eastern paper can supply tbe proof
for himself. We present four random instances:
1. Last eight' News contained a "dispatch" beaded "Irish
Unity" and dated "London May 23." This mornii g'a Time contained
the same beading and all clipped from tbe News. Five days ago every
great morning dally In the United States contained the identical dis-
patch dated "New York May 13" and beginning ;A dispatch to the
World from London says:"
2. Last night's News contained a dispatch headed "Bold Robbery"
and dated "Kansas City May 23." Tbe (Hard) Times this morning re-
printed the same from tbe News. The event occurred on May
20 and nearly every paper in the country printed a dispatch telling of
It last Monday the 21et.
3. Last Night's News Thief contained a stolen "dispatch" headed
"Help For Chinamen" and dated "Butte Montana May 23." The de-
cision referred to was banded down May 10 laet Saturday and every
full grown morning paper in tbe country printed the same identical
dispatch word for word last Sunday' morning tb&t the Dally News
Thief now prints as news with a chan ged date.
4. The News Thief "s story of the poisoning of a child In Blooms-
burg Ha. from eating chocolate candy printed la.it nfpht dated "May
23" appeared in the eastern papers five days ago dated "May IS."
As a clipping bureau for disgusting and Indecent sensational slush
tbe Dally News Thief Is a success. The (Hard) Times la playing a ri-
diculous role as a receiver of stolen goods.

QUARANTINE
ENFORCED
Passengers From San Fran-
cisco Being Turned
Back Daily
INDIGNATION GENERAL
Dr. Blunt the State Health
Officer Reported To Be
Coming On To Size Up
the Situation
The quarant'ne is beginning to be
striotly enforced and passengers from
"Frisco are being turned back dally by
Dr. C. F. Norton the inspector. Not
even through passengers can cross the
state even to the extent of going to
Mexico.
Last night Dr. Norton met the South-
ern Pacific train west of the city and
made a most rigorous inspection.
Every passenger was called on to make
affidavit that he had not been in Saa
Francisco since midnight of the 19th
instant when the quarantine went into
effect. Nine through passengers from
San Francisco to New York in the
Pullman oar and the Pullman conduc-
tor and colored porter were unable to
do this and were refused permission to
enter the state. Tbe names of the qua-
rantined persons were Mr. and Mrs. O
B'zlo and three sons of San Francisco
and Mr. and Mrs. J. La Matrle and
niece also of San Francisco and tbe
DECEPTION
two Pullman employees Churchall
and Dixon.
Wben It was found that there were
San Francisco passengers on board Dr.
Norton detained the entire- train until
they were transferred. The engine
was detached and rushed into El Paso
for orders. It was sent back by Supt.
Martin and brought in the balance of
the train and then an engine was sent
out to take the sleeper back to Roger's
switch just across the state line in New
Mexico where it was held over night.
This morning it was attached to the
westbound train and hauled back to
Demlng whence it will go east over the
Santa Fe.
These are all the passengers refused
admission since the quarantine went
into effect although Thursday Pull-
man Conductor Gift who wasin charge
of the sleeper was held up and sent
back. It Is said that last night when
tbe train was stopped one of the Pull-
man employes became terrified at tbe
prospeot of being quarantined and
dropping over in the dark vamoosed
over to Mexico but was persuaded
over the telephone to return and go
back with his car when he learned
that he was not going to be hurt.
No freight has yet been turned back
as tbe railroad being forwarned is very
careful not to bring any. Baggage of
tbe detained passengers was also held
up last night.
Superintendent Davis of the Wells-
Fargo Express company said today to
a Herald reporter that so far none of
their business had been held up at
the line as the company was sending
none. The worst feature is in regard
to business for Mexico from Frisco
whloh can not be Bent except through
Texas so that the quarantine amounts
to a total prohibition of all intercourse
between the two points. The express
oompany has hitherto bad all its office
supplies for Mexico sent from San
Francisco and tbls is now entirely cut
off and must in all probability be Bent
from some other point.
Tbls morning two passengers from
San Francisco were taken from the
Santa Fe train and sent back. One
was bound for El Paso and the other
for Guadalajara Mexico. Just what
tbey will do is not known. It would
seem that tbe only way passengers for
Mexico oan get through will be to
leave tbe train just beyond the state
line and transfer by wagons around to
Juarez. Ik has been suggested there
might be a obance there for some
one to put on a transfer and make some
money while the quarantine lasts.
The officials of tbe express compa-
nies at San Francisco are indignant
at the action of tbe state and in their
telegrams practically deny that the
plague exists there and say Texas is
the only state that has quarantined.
The following is the oath that all
passengers must sign:
"I do solemnly swear that neither I
nor my baggage have been In or come
from San Francisco since midnight
May 19 1900 or any other place inject-
ed with bubonio plaeue and I further
swear that I have signed my true and
legal name to tbls oath and hereby ac-
knowledge the same."
It is reported that the state health
officer Dr. Blunt is now enroute for
El Paso.
NO MORE CASES REPORTED.-
Washington May 24. The ma-
rine hospital service has been advised
that no new cases of plague have been
discovered in San Francisco.
