Tbe calm but graphic description of
the condition of tbe miners in tbe an-
thracite region by a staff correspon-
dent in our columos yesterday gives
tbe lie to tbe sensational representa-
tions with whlcb yellow journals have
ben regaling their readers since the
beginning of the coal strike. He
found an intelligent. Industrious and
comfortable working population hold-
ing their equal place in tbe ranks of
the self-respecting laboring men of
America.
To do tbe coal miners justice they
have" made no pretense of oeing ground
down to destitution and they resent
being plotured in degradation ragged
and starving" living in hovels and
devoid of self-respect. They claim
simply to have united In an effort to
secure uniform justice for those of
their eraft throughout the anteracite
district and however mistaken their
methods it it no part of their con
tention that any of their fellowt are
ttruggliag in hopelest poverty.
Down among these thrifty people
who think they have the vigor aod
the retourcet to bring the great
mine-owning corporations to terms by
dint of living tome weeks oo their
savings went the emissaries of yellow
journalism armed with cim- aod
pencil in search of horrors. Wnether
those who sent them had some political
purpose in representing tbe mine
owners as tyrannical oppressors who
ground the life out of their workmen
or merely dee! red harrowing tentatlons
which would help to sell their dis-
reputable papers the performance
n equally comtemptlb'e.
Tbe J minion of these purveyors of
filth and falsehood found themselves
driven to desperate- expedients' in
carrying out their instructions. They
were bound to have ghastly pictures
of misery and starvation and tbey
sharked up tbe material with reckless
disregard of truth and probability.
Tbey sought out gaunt acd hollow-
eyed models gave them a "make-up"
to suit their purpose and placed tbem
to a squalid "stege-sttting" of tbelr
own contr'vlog and to worked up
tbelr ghastly picture.
The libel upoo tbe employers was
too gross and palpable to excite any
feeling but derision aod sod tempt
but the inault to tbe workmen who
were the direct vlotims of tbe fraud
was metn enough to arouse Indigna-
tion and resentment. But tbe chief
offence after all was against those
misguided people who are inveigled
Into relying upon sensational journals
for their knowledge of what la doing
la tbe world.
Bryan At His Worst.
From the New York Sun.
It is not pleasant to find a Candida'
for president of tbe United Stales talk
log as foolishly or dishonestly as Mr.
Bryan talked at Monett Mo:
"Tbe reoubltceo are now bote tic
that we have reached a point where
we can loan mone to people in other
countries. 1 want to ask you whetbe
tou regard tbat as an evidence of proe
uerlty. Why would any man tend his
money to Earooo for investment if h
could find a place in tblt couatry to In
vest It? Money sent abroad for invest
ment mutt be sent for one of two rea
tons either because the man who tend
the money over tbere thlnkt more
tbe people over there than he doet of
tbe people here and doet it for love
and devotion or becaute it it a matter
of business tbat Is. because he can in
vest it to better advaotage in a Europe
an oountry than he can In this coun
try."
Mr. Bryan either knows or doet not
know that the couotry ban accumulat
ed to much money under tbat financia
system whlcb he it trying to break
down that it has money to lend at
low rate of interest to the rest of the
world. He either knows or does not
know that alow rate of interest is gool
for tbe oountry in general especially
for that "debtor class" for which he
shows so much concern. He either
knows or doet not know that a country
which I able to lend must be prospe-
rous. He either knows or does not
know tbat tbe big slice of the German
loan taken by a life insurance company
represents In largs measure tbe aav
Ings of maoy men in moderate clrcum
staooes.
If he does not know these things he
Is too big a fool to be president. If he
does aod yet talks as he talked at
Monett he 1 too dishonest to be presl
dent.

weeks after bonding It the man Bill
had taken out enough ore to take up

extracted enough gold to mke him
self Independently rlch.Njw be has just
made another strike the rlobest in
the history of the mine. Assays of tbe
o9w find show between $30.0CO and
$40000 a ton in gold. Some of the
pleoes taken out are at least half solid
gold. It Is the richest strike made in
Montana in ten years and has created
considerable excitement in mining
circles.
