that the culture of rice can he made
profitable in that section in wnanon
and other counties the exprlments
have proven a great success and many
farmers and several syndicates will
plant great nelus or tne grain n-i
season.
UOUMENT TO DENTON.
The citzens of Denton have begun
a movement for the erection of a
monument to the memory of the great
htatesman John B. Denton. This has
brought up the question as to where
he was buried which has opened a live-
ly discussion in the Dallas N.-ws. He
was killed by Indians in 1842 and it
was thought that his remains were
buried near Denton but th's is dis-
puted and may delay the movement
for his monument.
STATE MAY HELP.
The citizens of Galveston are still
calling for help and the relief commit-
tee announces that many people wl"
have to suffer for lack of thelter if
help is not obtained. It is claimed
by many that the state constitution
does not prohibit the state from giv-
ing aid in such cases and many of the
representatives and senators are of the
same opinion. It now seems probable
again that the governor will call a
special session of the legislature to
make an appropriation for the relief
of that stricken city.
TEXAS CITIES.
The Sherman Democrat takM a hand
in the population squabble now on be-
tween San Antonio. Dallas and Hous-
ton and gives some facts in the fol-
lowing: San Antonio has thirty-six
siiles of incorporated territory and
Houston only nine. San Antonio has
5.1.321 inhabitants and Houston 44.-
t33. With its limited territory Hous-
ton made greater gains than the Ala-
mo City during the past ten years. If
Houston's limits were as large as San
Antonio she would perhaps bo the larg-
est city. Houston will no doubt be the
big cjty of Texas and with the con-
struction of the proposed nal will
grow to become one of the greatest
cities in the south.
NEW MEXICO.
WANTS TO INCORPORATE.
The citizens of Alamogordo are agi-
tating the question of incorporating
that city. The town now has over
2M)0 people and it is urged that incor-
poration is essential to goo-1 govern-
ment. A NEW MILL.
The Ijone Star mining company at
Media Dia canon has It contract
for the erection of a big mill. The
fVirce of workmen are now at work
putting up the structure '-he mill
will have a capacity of 5D0 tons.
BUSINESS RI'SHING.
The population of the While Oaks.
Nopal. Capitan and Jicarilla districts
has increased many fold during the
past summer. The mines rrt being
developed rapidly and the n-.-w houses
erected are more than were p. it up dur
ing the past two years.
INDIANS WON.
At the horticultural fair just closed
at Santa Fe the Indian school won al
most every prize they competed for.
The school won ten first premiums
and seven honorable mentions in
vegitabies and very near all the prizes
on flowers. The school products were
highly complimented by the judges.
POLITICS GALORE.
Albuquerque is the hot be I of poli-
tic In the territory this week and will
remain so until the election is over.
The headquarters of both the republi-
can and democratic parties were es-
tablished there last week and as the
campaign grows warmer the crowds
f office seekers grow larger.
BAD MAN KILLED.
A shooting occurred at Lu Vegas
Monday afternoon in which a notor-
ious character was killed. He was
Pablo Lticero. a Mexican v ho has
been in many difficulties in that city.
It is said'that he got drunk on whis-
key and went about town trying to
raise a disturbance. Finally he met
Mariano Salazar who could no escape
him and shot him with immediate re-
sults. IRRIGATION SCHEME.
A dispatch from Clayton iys: An
eastern syndicate is being c.rganized
for the purpose of damming Apache
canon near Clayton. This canon and
its wide network of tributary arroyos
gulches and draws comprise ire drain-
age channels of the eastern slopes of
the Sierra Grande mountains and a
dam thrown across the cano.t at the
proposed point would form a lake
twenty miles long with an average
width of one-quarter of a mile and
an average depth of 40 feet. This lake
and its drainage feeders would provide
water for the irrigation of 100.000
acres of land ami would also place
abundant and permanent water upon
a large and excellently grassed and
sheltered stock range.
At the point of the proposed dam
construction the canon is but 150 feet
in width the dam itself to t; of solid
masonry thirty feet thick tnd forty
feet high with an estimated cost of
$100.00'). The lands to be irr:gated are
practically in one body and lie just
southeast of Clayton. They have an
average soil depth of twenty feet pnd
their fertility assures profuse croppage
the favorable seasons of the region
assuring also a great variety in har-
vest schedule. The stock range thus
fully utilized will support scores of
thousands of cattle and sheep.
ARIZONA.
MARKETING KRI IT.
The fruit crop of the valleys in Ari-
zona is fairly good and the quality is
said to be the best for several years.
A great deal of the fruit is Ix-ing ship-
ped and is finding a ready market
wherever sold.
MURPHY ON THE STCMP.
Governor Murphy the republican
candidate -for delegate to congress. Is
toarlng the territory In the Interest
of his candidacy. He arrived in Tuc-
son yesterday on a special train accom-
panied by several of his fntnds and
the Indian school band. He will speak
there today and continue th journey
over the territory speaking nd hav-
ing bis band- to play at intervals.
TO TAP COAL FIELDS.
The Tombstone Prospector says:
Some good concessions hoe been
made to the Gila Valley. C-lobe &
I'orthern railroad to run a s-pur to the
coal fields which are in tho western
part "of the Stanley Butte mining dis-
trict not over five miles from the
mountains. If the railroad does enter
this district it will mean a great deal
to those who have grown old and gray
holding down coal copper and gold
claims in that section.
MEXICO.
IN CHARGE AT DALLAS.
The Texas state fair management
selected J. E. Iawther of the City of
Mexico to superintend th'i ronltry ex-
hibits at the session now in progress.
He is an experienced man in that line
and is the one to which most credit Is
due for the development of the in-
dustry in the republic.
POULTRY CROP.
The poutry industry has advanced
possibly faster than any other indus-
try in the republic. The farmers of
that country have imported fine breeds
from the United States and me giving
the chicken business every attention.
The crop this year is expected to ex-
ceed by far the product of any former
year.
TREATMENT OF YAQUIS.
The war department of Mexico has
adopted a policy in tb- treatment of
the Yaqiiis that will enlictt om men-
elation. They are separating ihe wives
of the Yaquis from their husbands but
are taking the best of care of them.
They have comfortable quarters and
are fed and clothed far bi'ter than
Ihe Yaquis could feed them during
the rough campaign.
GREEN PARTY IN POWER.
An exchange from Sonora states that
there has been a new development in
the troubles at Cananeas. The com-
missarlo of police was removed by the
local judge at Fronteras and a former
chief of police at Nogales named Mar
tinez was appointed In his sial. The
deposed officer and several of his police
were thrown in Jail and ihe camp
practically turned over to the Green
party who have assumed control of
the Lindsay property
CHANGE EXPECTED.
The Anglo-American published in
the City of Mexico says: It is whis
pered on what seems to be excellent
authority that Lie. Rebollar. governor
of the federal district is to be elevated
to the position of attorney-general and
that his position as governor will be
rilled by Lie. Angel ZImbrcn. Lie.
Zimbron Is at present vice governor
and I make the prediction (hat if this
change comes about he will make one
of the best governors this district has
ever had. He is competent honest and
thoroughly conscientious.
