Chains Claim
Housewives to
Pay Chain Tax
DALLAS. Dec. 4. (U.P.) -House-
wives who buy the family grocer-
ies will be the owes who will have
to pay the increased taxes placed
upon chain atores \ in Texas,
spokesmen for the chains said
here today.
The chain store tax, nphelrl
Thursday by the Texp* Supreme
court, is tantamount te " an arti-
ficial and arbitrary increase hi
the eost of living," attorneys for
two of the oompanies affected
said. \
"The Supreme Cowt Has ruled
the Texas chain store tax to ho
constitutional and K is hot our
purpose here to take issue with
that decision, but we should not
overlook the fact that there may
be a vaat difference between what
is technically Vithin the law' and
■what is wise from the stand-
point ef public welfare," WHliam
H. Clark, Jr., attorney for Safe-
way stores, and John Touchstone,
an attorney far Great Atlantic
and Pacific Tea Company, laid
m a point statement.
"The chains took thin cam# to
eourt not only because ef their
conviction that the tax is jroas.
ly rfisoriminntory, but, is against
the interest nf consumers, part-
icularly the under-privileged, te
whom an artificial and arbitrary
iworease in the cost of living, is
a very serious thing.
"Sponsors of the tar claimed
at the time of its enactment that
it was for the purpose of equali-
zing the tax burden. Actually the
chains pay ail the taxes that so-
called independents pay, plus cor-
poration, income and Social Se-
curity taxes from which most
small kn*in««*es are exempt.

Treatment Small
Wounds Outlined
DETROIT, Dec. 4, (UP)—Man-

dog in the matter of successfully
treating injuries, according to Dr.
William D. Gatch, dean and profes-

ef radian* medical school. ;
Cleanliness* is the only real
treatment tor wounds, Dr. Gatch
Mbid at a hospital meeting here.
"Aad who ever knew of a dog's
wounds becoming infected-" he
askad.
The Indiana surgeon explained
that a dog carefully and patiently
lieks wounds it has received in. a
fight. Ne said that If human
being* exercised similar eare and
imtelligenoe, instead of using anti-
septics they would be better off

'"The thing to do lor a« accidental
wound," be said "is te eleape
)t immediately. M you cut ytfur
linger, hold H under the water
finucet, and then wrap it in a
aterile bandage. That is all that's
.*aeu* ary. If the wound has beer
cleansed properly and wrapping i*
sterile, there will be no further
trouble." •
Dr. Gatoh said that amies*
wounds are on toe faet, tj ey
should be left open. He said that
if mankind woiuld stop trying to
