Regulation Game
Set For Saturday
As Workouts End
Sprinir football traininif will
conie to a halt under the lights
Saturday nitfht at Kouts field.
An inters.|uar| game, ''complete
with everythiriK." will be (Tin at H,
Coach Odus Mitchell stated earlier
m the week.
SpritiK workouts began Feb. 9,
and thoujfh the team looked "slop-
py" at first, "it has been shaping
up steadily," Mitchell stated.
Last year's championship MV("
team will be represented in Satur-
day's cla.xh by 17 returning lettei-
men. Bill Carrico and Hal Byrd
are out of action at present with
let; injuries.
Two MVt all-conference men
will be on the field Saturday nif(ht.
V'errion Cole received the Associ-
ated Press nod last fall for the all-
conference slot while A liner Haynes
was picked for the left-half posi-
tion. Carrico was chosen as all-
conference left ifuard.
•Several of this year's team re
reived MVC honors for perform-
ances last fall. Cole was chosen as
hack-of the-week in September and
again in November. Bill Groce, who
is the most likely starting fullback
this year, was picked as MVC back-
if the week during October of last
year.
Ilaynex took backfield honors
during November along with Byrd,
wh;> received the same nod for his
performance in the line.
The game was the final one for
the Kagless, and it was the second
consecutive defeat suffered by
Coach II. G. fl'etei Shands' eager*
on the road trill.
Bradley Beat*. Flock
Saturday nijfht, nationally
ranked Bradley gave the Kagles a
) points, two short of the total made an -0 .. ...
by Fred Hopkins in 1964-56 when wallop.nK in Peoria III
Hopkins tallied 618. North TexaH fe" b<,h,nd ,lra,)'
Cincinnati clinched a tie for the
conference title in defeating the
| Kagles. Oscar Robertson scored 44
points in leading his teammates to
their 22nd victory in 24 games.
Robertson registered 11 field goals
to break his school record of 022
points. He now has H28, and he
also broke the free-throw record
of 21 consecutive hits by complet-
ing 2:t charity tosses successfully
Monday.
Cincy Cinches Tie
Ranked third nationally, Cincin-
nati still has to play Bradley and
St. l.ouis, but the worst it could
do, by losing both games, would be
to tie Bradley for the title.
Mudd's performance was tops
for NT, and Darrell Reit/.el hit for
12 to back him up. Ray Toole was
the only other F,agle eager to
reach the double column with 11.
Besides Robertson, three other
Cincinnati starters hit for double
figures. Ralph Davis turned in a
20-point performance, and Men-
denhall and Tenwick tallied 10
each.
orth Texas
ley 82-19 after holding an 8-7 lead
in the first 7 minutes of play,
but the shooting of Reitzel anil
Mudd closed the gap .'i'.t-.'t 1 before
the first half ended.
A partisan crowrl of tiO(M) gave
Mudd a "fabulous" ovation as the
big forward left the game with
three and one-half minutes of play
remaining. He was the game's top
point-maker with 20 and was sec-
| "n.l to Mason in rebounding with
14.
The two losses buried North
Texas in the Missouri Valley con-
! ference cellar for the second time
j in its two years of competition,
t North Texas closed out the season
j with a 2-12 conference record and
a fi-18 season record.
Although Mudd fell short of the
! North Texas season scoring rec-
ord. the Kagle star now holds the
re ord for most field goals scored
n one season. He ended the sea-
ion slate with a total of 194 field
roals. The old record was held by
i Hopkins, who sank a total of 178
in the 1954-55 season.
