ACROSS FROM COURTHOUSE
The senior statesman, a moder-
ating influence on Japanese pol-
icy, was strucK, in the chest and
jaw and his condition was report-
ed as serious.
The gunman gained entry to
Hiranuma's home by the auto-
graph ruse and fired three shots
from" a pistol he had hidden in a
parchment scroll on which he
pretended to want the barton's sig-
nature.
He was captured before he
could tiec the grounds of the Hi-
ranuma home.
Hiranuma has been regarded as
a mainstay of the cabinet of Pre-
mier Prince Fumimaro Konoye
and definitely a moderating in-
fluenced /
Observers said, therefore, that
the fact that such an attack should
occur was not considered a good
sign in a time of tense'interna-
tional relations.
There was no immediate report,
however, on (he motive of the
baron's assailant.
The attacker, identified as Na-
chiko Nishiyama. 33, called at Hi-
ranuma's home before 8 a. m
today and gained access under the
-Pretext- that, he wished the vice
premier's autograph on a roll
parchment. Nishiyama hails from
Okayama prefecture, the same as
Hiranuma does-

LONDON. Aug. 14. (AP) —The
United States is new pledged tc
the reconstruction of post-war
Europe and the support ot the
Russian - British cause on every
front, informed British sources
said today in reviewing the joint-
ly-issued Roosevelt - Churchilll
statement.
Things left unsaid in the state-
ment are regarded as fully as im-
portant as those of the eight-point
joint declaration.
Omission of , reference to Japan
"implies that Japuv was-one of
the main points of discussion," a
Japanese diplomat admitted.
British informant said the meet-
ing was at Mr. Roosevelt's inyita-
tibn.
The Japanese source said that;
the temDo of the Japanese'advance
in South Asia was slowed even as
rumors of the historic meotinp
between the British and American
leaders sped around the warring
world.
The Roosevelt - Churchill con-
ferences, which were attended by
ranking officials and military na-
val and air experts of both coun-
tries, were reliably reported to
have lasted at least two or three
days.

A good way to make iced coffee

pour it into your ice fray. Re-

add enough water to fill the glass
and your coffee will be excep-
tionally good.
But neither the time nor the
place of the meeting was disclos-
ed here immediately.
Now there would bfe no surprise
in London if a further announce-
ment were made that Roosevelt
and ChurChill had sent 'personal
assurances to Joseph Stalin and
the Russian people that Britain
and Jho United States will give
the U. S. S. R. the fullest indus-
trial cooperation in arming and
supplying the Red army, air force
and navvy.
News of the meeting was broad-
cast by, radio to Lord Privy Seal
Clement Attlee, who has been
acting as Churchill's deputy in
his absence.
