BOWLS TO BALLS
' With dazzling change of pace
we move from bowls to balls, and
ask another question: Do you
know how the term "Texas Lea-
gue" got its name?
A Texas Leaguer, of^ course,
is a linev hit over second base.
Some believe It also means a sim-
ilar hit over first or third, but
L. J. Lawrence of Tyler says no.
The term originated at Texar-
kana, he says. Texarkana was in
the Texas League back in the
early part of the century.
The park, like the' city itself,
was half in Texas and half In Ar-
kansas. Home plate, first and
third were in Arkansas, and sec-
ond base was in Texas.
Thus, anytime a batter hit a
line over second base, he hit in-
to Texas and fans said he "Hit-a "
Texas Leaguer."
Lawrence, incidentally, played
bush league baseball in Hill coun-t
ty with Tris Speaker, the immor-
tal outfielder.
