Let your life lightly dance on the

Happiness is being alone.
There are many times when that is
a true statement especially if you live
in the barracks.
Sometimes however being alone
means being lonely. Thanksgiving
and Christmas are by tradition fami-
ly days and by spirit days of sharing.
Devastatingly lonely times are ahead
for the person who has not learned to
plan for a happy season.
Many different types of singles live
at Fort Hood. Some of them have
shared their ideas for planning suc-
cessful holidays.
Quite a few “geographical bache-
lors” are stationed here. Regardless

of the reason for being separated
from their family singles find the
holiday season is a difficult Hme to
cope with that separation.
As a senior NCO with a family in
Colorado puts it: “I regret not having
had Thanksgiving with my family
but it was too far to go home. I will be
home for Christmas but for now I’ve.
spent some time on the phone with
my family.”
Living in the BEQ he especially
misses the “homey” atmosphere and
was happy about an invitation for
Thanksgiving dinner at a friend’s
home. “They have kids and I enjoy
kids” he said. “I spent my day going
to the different sports activities be-
cause I really like sports and I know
many of the people in the program.
“I house-sat for a co-worker and en-
joyed being in a home with lots of
space and a kitchen. There were also
a couple of dogs to care for. It was just

me feel lonely.”
Many of Fort Hood’s soldiers are
singles who have never been mar-
ried.
A young sergeant has PCS orders
for the first of the year and is unable
to take leave to return to her child-
hood home. This young woman pas-
sed along the following advice:
“Spend time with friends try not to
be alone. Plan a get-together in the
dayroom sihce you know it is going
to be lonely. Being with another
family Just sort of makes you miss
your own more—so make plans with
other single servicemembers to have
a good time. Play games go to a
show just do it together. Don’t wait
for a good time to find you make
plans to create your own.”

Lonely? Singles can plan activities together
A dyed-in-the-w ool bachelor
lieutenant colonel shared his recipe
to be miserable: “If you don’t get off
your duff don’t make the first move
and don’t meet people you can be
sure to be alone and miserable.”
He added some good advice on
how to avoid this pitfall. “My rela-
tives are too far away for me to visit
so I spend my holidays with friends.
Friends are the next best thing to
having.a family especially if they are
friends with common interests. Mak-
ing the first move helps. One person
has to take the initiative and start
something no matter how small. The
key to good times is sharing if no-
thing more than sharing a hamburger
combo at a local restaurant.”
Divorced singles are another large
and steadily growing group. Some of
these are single parents and here is a
tip from one: “Make sure there is con-
tact on the Holiday between the child
the other parent. Also see to it that
the child remembers the parent with

A Catholic chaplain summed up
the dilenima of the single soldier
away from home and stressed avail-
able programs to ease loneliness.
“The first step is to realize that it is a
growing-up process being away
from one’s family for the first time.
‘Man has to be in control of his own
destiny’ as the saying goes. Instead
of being miserable because someone
else is happy or feeling sorry for your-
self appreciate what you have. Take
