We keep the batteries on the
charger when not in use.
As I get in the back of the
am bulance we pull out and
pick up the chief the red over-
head lights are turned on and
we head out CODE-2 if there’s
any traffic e’ll turn it to
CODE-3.
In the back of the ambulance
it’s my responsibility to insure
that the proper items are ready
for use. This is simple due to
not knowing until we get there
hat e’ll need but som
items area standard like back
board with head brace and C-
collar.
When we pull up to the scene
the dispatcher gives the time as
12:50 a.m. To think I was in bed
asleep “just five minutes ago!*’
I JUMP OUT with the Sphyg-
momanometer better known
as a B.P. cuff and stethoscope. I
take in the scene with a quick
look around. I see a police car
parked in the street behind it is
a motorcycle lying on the side
of the road. A man’s body is a
few feet away from the bike
lying on his back feet together
and knees spread. The chief
stops on one side while I go
over to the other to check for
the presence of a blood press-
ure as the chief checks for
pulse. As I put the B.P. cuff
around his arm I notice how
very young he seems not much
more than a boy I think. I later
learn that he’s just turned 21.
pump on the bulb to inflate the
cuff and then release the press-
ure while listening for a sound
watching for the needle in the
dial to jump. Nothing....I take a
couple of breaths as I-pump it
up again again I let off on the
pressure...nothing. PUMP IT
UP AGAIN. This time I say a
prayer “Please let there be
something anything.” Again I
let off this tim I hold my
breath afraid that if I breathe
I’ll miss it...NOTHING NOT A
SOUND. I sit there a moment
looking at him so young. I rock

ing him out for other signs. He
looks at me and I shake my
head. We get up as he calls to
the police officer to have him
radio for Judge Hardin. It’s
going to be along night.
1 LOOK at the others and
wonder. I’ve been doing this for
four years and it still bothers
me. They have over 35 years be-
tween them. Then I know yes
it bothers them too. If it didn’t
they wouldn’t care and if you
don’t care you don’t do this job
for nothing.
No one talks about HIM
other than the technical ques-
tions: he’s not even there. There
is talk though even laughter as
we talk and even joke about
anything at all just to keep from
thinking about him. Because to
do that we would have admit-
ted our own mortality and then
we would cry. Being grown
men we can’t do that we can’t
cry over this boy in the middle
of the street so we joke and
laugh.
After what seems like hours
Judge Hardin arrives. He asks
questions like which way was
he going? East. Was he drink-
ing? We can’t tell (you can’t
smell alcohol on som eone’s
breath when they’re not brea-
thing.) What do we feel was the
cause of death? A broken neck.
Was he wearing a helmet? No
not that it would have at-
tered. How old was he? 21..just.
THE FUNERAL home is cal-
led and upon their arrival they
get the time and preliminary
cause of eath The ju
advises them that the DPS will
have to have a blood sample in
order to do a blood/alcohol test.
With this they depart. Once the
bike is picked up we leave to
return home and to bed.
I arrive home and as I’m un-
dressing I notice the time: 2:55
a.m. I’ve been gone just two
hours it seems like forever. It
was for one person. My wife
asks me about the “run.” I real-
ly don’t want to talk about it so I
cut her short by telling her that
I have to get to sleep. At this she
quiets down.

•(Cont. from pg. Al)-
I can’t sleep. Everytim I
close my eyes I see this young
boy lying beside the road de&d.
After tossing and turning for an
hour or two my wife asks me if
I want to talk about it. We spend
abut the next half hour or so
talking. Talking about the stuf-
pidity of it the waste the total
senseless waste of it. There
were so many ways that this
could have been prevented.
ONCE AGAIN I try to sleep-
...no luck. At some point I must
have slept because when the
alarm goes off I realize that I’ve
been sleeping.
I’ve had other fatalities: frp
old age heart attacks evefr
others from accidents includ-
ing one that burned to death.
But none as young as this none
that were as totally preventable
as this.
I’d like to talk about some of
the ways that this could have
been prevented. ecause
don’t like getting out of bed at
night to examine a boy who has
wasted his life for no reason’
especially when he did it on
bike. You see I ride also.
NEVER never never drink
and ride. As bad as it is to drirjk
and drive it’s 20 times worse on
a bike.
His speed was estimated at 55
MPH in a 45 MPH zone at night
on a section of road where. he
probably didn’t mean to be.(
Education in the dangers of
motorcycles may or may no!
have saved this boy. The best
training in the world is useless
if it isn’t internalized “taken to
heart” so to speak. Ultimately^
no one can be responsible for
the rider but he himself and
even the best of riders can get in
situations where there is no
way out. Accidents real ones
a all too often fate
doesn’t need any help from the
drunks the idiots and the simp-
ly inexperienced. As a parent a
rider and an EMT volunteer I
say the price of such “acci-
dents” is way too high.
Please ... let’s find away to
stop paying it.
