Tax training sessions set
Training sessions will be held for the AARP Tax Aide Program in
both Temple and Killeen during the first two weeks in January. The
Killeen training will be held in the Killeen Community Center
Business Highway 190 and W.S. Young 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Jan. 7914
and 16. The Temple training will be held in the Temple Junior
College library 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Jan. 81017 and 19. This training
is open to anyone who is willing to volunteer to work one day a week
during the tax season February 1 April 151990. Volunteers may
attend the training sessions without prior registration. However it
would be helpful if they were to contact Harry Phillips 773-9806 in
Temple or Joyce Mayer 699-2759 in advance to ensure adequate
supplies for teaching are available. The Tax Aide Program is a free
income tax preparation service for the low and moderate income
elderly. Counselors are trained and tested by AARP volunteers
under the supervision of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The
instructors have been certified by the IRS. Counseling sites are
located throughout the central Texas area. The sites will open Feb.
11991. Older adults are encouraged to check with their local senior
centers for information on places and times.
CFC campaign goal exceeded
The 1991 Combined Federal Campaign has been successful.
Over $485000 was collected exceeding the installation goal by more
than $135000.
Activated soldiers’ family members need ID Card
Family members of reserve component soldiers called to active
duty for 30 days or more may be issued DD Form 1173 (Tan)
Identification Card upon request. The card will be issued for a period
of 180 days from the date of the sponsor's activation. Family mem-
bers will be required to present a copy of the sponsor’s activation
orders marriage license and birth certificates for children to verify
dependency. Sponsor will ensure upon release from active duty that
all DD Form 1173 ID Cards are retrieved from their respective
family members and returned to their appropriate unit. Unit com-
manders will ensure collection and destruction of the cards. DA
Form 5431 (Reserve Family Member Identification Card) is to be
retained by the Family Member even if a DD Form 1173 is issued.

Free college testing available
The College Level Examination Program (CLEP) and Subject
Standardized Test (SST) program are available to soldiers free of
charge. There is a charge for adult family members and DoD
civilians: $38 for CLEP and $25 for SST. For counseling and test
scheduling soldiers and adult family members should visit the
soldier’s servicing education center. DoD civilians may receive
counseling and test scheduling by visiting any education center.

Powers of Attorney can be sent with 1040-A
If you find yourself in the middle of Form 1040-A and are unable
to obtain your spouse’s signature on the tax return don’t despair.
Obtain a power of attorney from your spouse before tax season.
Taxpayers should also be prepared to file a photocopy of the power
of attorney with the tax return. If you intend to claim tax credit on
your 1990 income tax return for child and dependent care expenses
you must provide the name address and social security number of
the dependent care provider on your tax return. Taxpayers should
request IRS Form W-10 from each person or activity who provided
care for their dependents during the tax year to obtain this informa-
tion. If you need assistance call James R. Snyder 287-3199.
Dependent income tax guidelines announced
If you plan to claim a dependent on your income tax return who
will be at least two years old by the end of the tax year and is a U.S.
citizen or resident of Canada or Mexico you must list the depend-
ent’s social security number on your form 1040 or 1040A. If you do
not list the dependent’s SSN when required you may be subject to
a monetary penalty. Applications for social security numbers may be
made by executing Form SS-5 and presenting it to the nearest social
security administration office (located in the Federal building in
Temple). Applicants should be prepared to produce necessary evi-
dence required by the social security administration at the time of

2nd Armd Div family support seminars scheduled
The next weekly update for family members of the 2nd Armored
Division will be held in the Phantom NCO Club 7-8 p.m. tonight.
There is no baby sitting service available. All division spouses are
invited. A representative from the division public affairs office will
provide you with the latest update on 2nd Armd Div soldiers in
Saudi Arabia. A panel of experts will be available to answer any
questions. The following units’ family members will be given the
opportunity to be video taped beginning at 6 p.m.in the Hood Room:

The staff is looking for volunteers to assist in baby sitting for the

Road closures announced
To ensure your safety and the uninterrupted training of National
Guard soldiers coming to Fort Hood all roads on the reservation
west of West Range Road will be closed until Feb. 20. In addition
there will be no east-west traffic within the area south of and
including Royalty Ridge Road down to Old Copperas Cove Road.

HIV testing rescheduled
The next HIV testing will be Jan. 9 and eveiy Wednesday
thereafter for 2nd Armd Div soldiers in their birth-month and those
on levy. Soldiers should be seated in Palmer Theater by 7:25 a.m.
They should bring their identification card and a pen with them.
Questions concerning the testing should be directed to Staff Sgt
Michael McQuay at 287-1915.
Laundry services available at Hood
Laundry services for soldiers is now available. This service is for
personal military clothing only. The service provides weekly bundle
service for up to 26 pieces to include the laundry bag. Items are
washed dryed and folded however they are not pressed. The
monthly charge is $12. For details soldiers should check with their
unit supply clerk.
Officers Candidate School board scheduled
A III Corps OCS examining board is scheduled for Jan. 23-25.
Applications must arrive by the Jan. 11 deadline at the Adjutant
General Personnel Actions Branch ATTN: AFZF-AGM-A-S. There
will be a mandatory pre-briefing for all qualified applicants at 7:30
p.m. Jan. 23. Points of contact are Spec. Smith in Corps 287-0087

African American History Month ideas sought
February’s 1991 African American History Month observance
will require suggestions and talents to be a success. If you your
friends or your organization can contribute the HI Corps Equal
Opportunity Office is interested in hearing from you. Call 287-2892

163rd Ml schedules Black History program
The deadline is Jan. 25 for applications for the Black History
program sponsored by Company A 163rd Military Intelligence
Battalion. The program is scheduled for Feb. 22 at the West Fort
Hood Recreation Center. Persons with talents in the arts and
interested in participating should call Curtis Bethany at 288-9732.
FHTC sends tax returns free
The Fort Hood Tax Center (FHTC) will send your income tax
return electronically. The IRS will notify the FHTC within 48 hours
that your return has been received and accepted or rejected. The
service is free. Bring your prepared federal income tax return to the
FHTC in Building 209. The FHTC will be open 8:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m.
Monday-Thursday Jan. 30-April 15 and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday.
