Fort Hood Area Dolphins Swim Team
CORPUS CHRISTI TEXAS The 12 swim-
mers representing the Fort Hood Area Dolphins Swim
Team finished their winter season with excellent per-
formances at the South Texas Shortcourse Champi-
onship meet Feb. 23-25 at the Corpus Christi Nata-
torium.
The local swimmers competed along with 415
swimmers from 17 teams representing various cities
from Central and South Texas.
Fort Hood’s swimmers included Mariella
Alcover Vanessa Gonzalez Brandon and Wendi
Letson Jenny Delaney Ryan Kline Jennifer and Matt
Nicholson and Catie Rowan Jeff Moltenberry Jennie
Murray and Kendall Witt.
The team’s head coach is John Baltzell.
The swimmers achieved 41 personal best times
out of the 49 events they competed in.
Five of the 12 swimmers also achieved top-eight
finishes.
Brandon Letson 14 and Alcover 12 finished
with the most top-eight finishes for boys and girls
respectively.
Each had a second place finish Brandon Letson
in the 1650-yard freestyle and Alcover in the 100-
yard breast.
The top time drop for the boys was Kline who
dropped 25 seconds off of his 500-yard freestyle time.
The top time drop for the girls was Rowan who
dropped 10 seconds off of her 200-yard freestyle.
The team’s four top eight individual finishers and
their places were: Alcover 200 individual medley

Dolphins finish winter swim season with excellent performances
Members of the Fort Hood Area Dolphins Swim Team achieved 41 personal best times out
of 49 events at the South Texas Shortcourse Championship meet Feb. 23-25 in Corpus
Christi. The Dolphins will resume practice in April for the spring/summer season.

established by United States Swimming.

National time standards rank in range from
through AAAA and are the method of comparing
times and ability levels for swimmers across the coun-
try.
Matt Nicholson achieved his first A time in three
events.
Moltenberry achieved AA time in one event. Witt
also achieved an A A time.
Between the 12 swimmers they achieved a total
of one AAA time nine A A times 16 A times and 19
BB times.
In addition to the individual events Dolphin
swimmers also took a 7th place finish in the girls 11-
12 age group 200 free and 200 medley relays and
8th in the 400 free relay.
Swimmers included Alcover Jennifer Nicholson
Witt Murray and Gonzalez.
Although team scoring was not a primary con-
cern for a small team like the Dolphins they still man-
aged to finish 5th overall in the 11-12 age divisions
for boys and girls 7th in the 10 and under boys age
division and 5th in the boys 13-14 age division.
Witt and Moltenberry both 11 also achieved state
championship qualifying times.
They will join Alcover as the three team qualifi-
ers for the state meet Saturday and Sunday at the
Texas A&M University pool at College Station.
The 60 member team will go to a reduced train-
ing schedule including a well deserved break for the
next few weeks.
The first week of April the team will begin prac-
ticing at Abrams Physical Fitness Center for the spring
and summer season.
Their first meet of the season will be a competi-
tion at University of Texas the first week of May.
