Dramatic Rescue
Made Off Coast
0f Cold Alaska
JUNEAU, Alaska, Nov. 22,(UP)
—Seven persons escaped from a
flaming inotorship off the Alas-
kan coast last night when an
amphibious plane made a dra-
matic aerial rescue.
The motorship North Pass
was on the way from the Hyda-
burg, Alaska, Indian Convention
to Hoonah when an explosion in
a^gas tank sent flames raging
Wit of control. The ship had no
radio and could not summon
help.
A south-bound Pan American
Airways Clipper sighted the
stricken ship and radioed Coast
Guard Headquarters in Juneau.
An Alaskan Coastal Airlines
amphibious plane piloted by
Ray Henshaw reached the rapid-
ly-sinking vessel 30 minutes
later.
t,The plane landed near the
otorship and the passengers
paddled to it, clinging to a tiny
skiff launched from the flaming
craft's deck. The rescued per-
sons included two women and a
four-year-old child. Only two
of the seven were hurt, and they
suffered only minor burns.
The North Pass burned to the
waterline, and a Coast Guard
Cutter sank it with gunfire.

Rotan Firemen
Resume Christmas
Fund This Year
ROTAN, Nov 22, (Spl.)— Re-
suming a custom that has been
discontinued for the past few
years, the Rotan Volunteer Fire
Department, with the financial
aid of citizens of the town and
area, will again play Santa Claus
to the needy of the town and
community, according to an an-
nouncement from the Fire Chief,
A. B. Parker. This year, accord-
ing to Chief Parker, the needy
cases to be considered will not
be limited to the town proper,
but will include all such cases
within a radius of three miles
of the town.
Chief Parker requests that
names of needy families, or old
people who are in need of as-
sistance, be turned in to him
as soon as possible, so that on
Christmas Eve no one will be
forgotten. Gifts to needy fami-
lies will include both groceries
and toys, and, in some cases,
even articles of clothing.
Since this worthy annual
project is one in which the
whole community has a part,
Chief Parker is calling the pub-
lic's attention to the dozens of
jars placed on counters in every
business house in town, into
which contributions may be
dropped. The jars will be' picked
up by the Department just before
Christmas, and the funds used
for purchase'of needed items of
charity. Checks may also be
dropped into the jars, or mailed
or presented to Chief Parker.
The checks should be made pay-
able to the Fireman's Christmas
Fund.
