A TRIP TO THE BROWN'S
BY GRACE CLARK ALLBRIGHT
In the 1930's, Fanny Brown, a friend, was in our neighborhood
visiting her sister, Gladys Eddleman. When it was time for her to go home,
my sister, Frances and I decided that it would be great fun to hike the ten
miles with her, from our house to her home on Lemonville Road. We
wanted to attend a dance that night in an old store building near her home.
We started out early in the day enjoying being outdoors and getting some
exercise. After we had walked quite a distance, we began to get hot and
very thirsty so we stopped at the Womack's house near the road to ask for a
drink of water. A lady came out and gave us water from her well and she
even put some ice in it. That good well water really refreshed us! When we
were about a mile from the Brown's house, Mr. Claude Wingate came along
and offered us a ride the rest of the way.
When we arrived at the Brown home about lunch time, Mrs. Brown
cooked us a good meal of fried chicken, rice and gravy and vegetables. That
afternoon one of the Brown boys saddled three horses for us to ride. It was
great fun! The horse that I was riding was very frisky and liked to follow
cars. He started following a Model T truck and tried to stay up with it.
After a while, I finally managed to get him to slow down and I returned him
to the horse lot. My backsides were rubbed raw! We were dusty and sweaty
from our adventures so we took a bath in a big wash tub. Then we were
ready to go to the dance! We were offered a ride to the dance by someone.
The Dunn and the Brown brothers all attended the dance. A string band of
about three people played the music. Preston (Pres) McClellan played the
fiddle. He was married to Lillie Brown. I danced almost every set and
didn't feel tired. Our brother Ira Clark and his girlfriend, Bessie Eddleman
came to the dance, so they gave us a ride home. This was a fun day to be
remembered!23
