The Celebration of Life for Mr. James A. (Zay) Roberts, 65, of Orange, will be
Saturday at 11:00 am. at the Salem United Methodist Church. Rev. Dr. Carolyn McCall,
pastor will officiate. Rites of Christian Burial will follow in Gasby New Zion Cemetery
in Geneva, TX under the direction of Sparrow Funeral Home. He died February 3, 2009
at Memorial Hermann Baptist Orange Hospital. A native of Geneva, TX, he was
educated in the Orange Independent School District, graduating from Emma H. Wallace
High School in 1962. He furthered his education at Lamar University. He united with
the Salem United Methodist Church at an early age and remained a faithful and active
member until his death. Some of his religious activities include Lay Leader, Church
School Superintendent, Chairman of Evangelism Church Treasurer; and Chairman of the
Board of Missions. He was a member of the United Methodist Men at the District,
Conference, Regional, and National Levels. He was the first African American to serve
as a Delegate to the Jurisdictional and General Conference from this area. His working
years were spent at the former Orange Memorial Hospital. In recent years he was also
employed as a Representative at the Orange Ford Lincoln Mercury Automobile
Dealership. He was the first African American to run for County Commissioner in
Orange County, to serve as President of the American Heart Association, to serve as
President of the Orange County Council on Drugs and Alcohol, and also the first African
American member of Gideon International in the Golden Triangle. Mr. Roberts has been
involved in many organizations in the area. He had been a delegate to the Count, State,
and National Democratic Conventions, as well as being a delegate to the State and
National Conventions of the Coalitin of Black Democrats. He has also served as
President of the Golden Triangle Chapter of the Coalition of Black Democrats. Those
left to cherish his memory are four brothers, Truman B. Ikner of San Antonio, TX, Billy
Roberts, Jerry Roberts, and Johnny Roberts, all of Austin, TX, one sister, Shirley Hooper
of Austin, TX, his step-mother, Doris Swindle of San Augustine, TX, aunt Dainer B.
Edwards of Hemphill, TX and close friend of 34 years, Betty Wade of Orange.
The life of Mrs. Bonnie Mearis, 71, of Orange, will be celebrated during Memorial
Services Saturday at 4:00 p.m. at the Hart Congregation Hall of Jehovah Witnesses.
Brother Ken Martin will officiate. She died February 8, 2009 at Memorial Hermann
Baptist Orange Hospital. An Orange native, she resided in Oakland, CA a number of
years. She was employed in the public school system of Oakland, CA. She is survived
by one son, William Means of Australia, Six daughters, Marian Perkins of Denver, CO,
Frankie Morris of Orange, Bernadette Morris of Lake Charles, LA, Nicki Thompson of
Vallejo, CA and Tanya Mearis and Yolanda McGill, both of Oakland, CA, and 22
grandchildren.

Marian Frances Allis Rennie Meindl David, 84, of Orange, Texas passed away on
February 11, 2009 from complications of Parkinson's disease. Frances was born on
August 21, 1924 in Port Arthur, Texas to Frances and Richard Allis. She is survived by
her husband, Jules David and sister; June Whitlock of Port Arthur, TX. Frances was
preceded in death by her first husband, Nick Rennie originally of Whitaker, North
Carolina and second Husband, Hugh Meindl, originally from Two Harbors, MN. She48
