<▲, January is essentially a month of preparation
for Scout Anniversary Week. Some Troops
will devote the entire month to preparation for
window displays and live demonstrations, open
house affairs. Scout Sunday, participation in Coun-
cil or District activities and other events cele-
brating Scouting's birthday and the crusade to
Strengthen the Arm of Liberty. Other Troops will
be able to carry on such preparation and still spend
time on training in skills or a handicraft project.
The Scoutmaster's Program Notebook suggests
handicraft as an activity for the month, for the
purpose of making a practical piece of hike or
camp equipment, and also to provide something to
demonstrate during Scout Week. Announcement
has been made of Scouting's participation in the
National Civilian Defense Program, one phase of
which is assistance in first aid training. Handicraft
and first aid are combined in a project built around
making Troop, Home, Patrol and pergonal first aid
kits (page 25, this issue).
