New York March 25. Jennie Durch
a quarter-breed Mohawk who. In Sep-
tember last poisoned the Infant son of
Herbert Wlnahlp a wealthy farmer of
Cowlei Corner Putnam county la on
trial for her life at Carmel N. Y. She
la fifteen years old.
On the day of the baby's burial she
flung herself upon the child's casket
and sobbed out a confession of how she
had fed the Infant a poisoned peach.
She said she had loved her little
charge and because of her great lore
bad killed It
Medical men and otlr men of sci-
ence who have examined and studied
the girl differ as to her sanity.
Jennie Durch was a wilt and was
given a home by the Wlnahlp family
four years ago. The farmer and bis
family treated the girl as one of their
own. . When the baby Wilbur was
born Jennie Durch became Us guard-
ian night and day. I lor love rivaled
that of the child's mother. No one baa
been able to give a satisfactory expla-
nation of the crime. The murder It
elf was preceded by several Inren.
diary fires which the girl admitted

barn was burned and then followed
nine different attempts to burn the
Wlnshlp home.
Jennie's explanation of the Incen-
diarism Is that she wanted to see this
"flames shoot." After the barn had
been burned she said she Imagined
he was suspetced and this thought
preyed on her mind. When she had
decided to kill herself she thought of
the baby and concluded that the child
ahould die with her. She poisoned a
yeacb. and. giving the child a portion
ate the remainder herself.
Within ha f an hour the girl and the
Infant were taken violently 111. Mr.
Wlnahlp did all she could for both of
them. Before Bight set in the baby
died but Jennie Burch recovered. The
girl Insist that she poisoned the peach
with Iodine. Chemists employed by
the state say that the poison thai
killed the child was strychnine.
The girl la to be tried before Justice
Mills of the supreme court who has
appointed two lawyers to defend her.
It Is be'leved they will attempt to
prove Insanity at the time of the murder.

Florence Ala. March 25. Tha ne-
gro. Cleveland Harding who attempt-
ed to assault Mrs. ben F. Rtoe near
here Friday and who was driven off
by Mrs. Rice's shepherd dog was sum-
marily executed Sunday by his Intend-
ed victim's husband and some 200 or
300 sympathisers. Tied to a tree with
his arms op the negro was riddled
with bullets the first shot being fired
by Rice following which. It la said
very man In the crowd emptied bis
rerolter at the prisoner. It la said
that over 1000 shots were fired. The
negro was captured half a mile below
town and was taken before Mrs. Rice
who fainted at sight of him. Upon
recovering she fully Identified her as-
sailant and on being asked what
sholud be done with him. told the ne-
gro'n captors to do as they thought
best Harding was taken a ahort dis-
tance from the Rice home where a
conference of the moh leaders was
held. 8ome said burn him but shoot-
ing was decided on.
