STORY OF THE JORDAN.
The storm Wednesday night broke
up tho congregation at the tent before
the service had fairly begun and the
rain yesteruay morning made it nec-
essary to call off the meeting at that
time. Last night Evangelist Uoen de
livered his famous lecture on "The
Kiver Jordan." It Is more famous than
the Tiber the Ganges the Nile the
Amazon or the Mississippi not because
of Us size or commercial importance
but solely on account of It3 associa
tions with the greatest events in the
annals of tljne. its head springs in
number.character and surroundings re
semble those of the San Marcos. A
few miles below Its source it drops
down to the lake of Merom on a level
with the sea and from there to its
debouchure Into the sea of Gallilee it
flows through a narrow tortuous valley
or "crevice" in the surface of the land.
On the shores of the sea of Gallilee
CSO feet below he sea level Jesus
spent the greater part of his time and
did many of his wonderful works.
From the sea of Gallilee to the Dead
sea is a straight line is about 65 miles
but the course of the river Is very ser-
pentine and the descent is about 600
feet more making a total of nearly
1300 feet below sea level. This la the
deepest depression on the surface of
the earth. The waters of the Jordan
are pure and sweet but no living thing
can survive in the waters of the Dead
Sea surcharged as they are with
earthy salts in solution and so dense
that the human body floats easily on
the surface. Dr. Boen related a number
of Incidents among them he described
how he bnptlzed a Pennsylvania lady
at the same place where Jesus was
baptized.
Supplementary to the main topic
Dr. Boen gave a brief sketch of the
topography of Paletlne In general
which confirms the Bible narratives.
We always read up to "Jerusalem" and
It is tip from every part of tho country.
He also stated that he verified the pos-
sibility of Joshua reading the law in
the hearing of half a million people. He
stationed a friend in the aniphetheater
between Ebal and Gcrazim while he
went high up on the latter mountain
and read selections from tho scrip-
tures which were heard perfectly by
his auditor.
. . . .
w. Boen and Challenner nave m-
Vd the ministers of the city to con
duct the morn'ng services. Dr. Butler
has preached twice. Rev. M. Fergus-
on the new pastor of the Free Bap-
tist church would have preached yes-
tenia v bad it not rained. He will
preah tomorrow.
