NEW YORK DAY BY DAY.
By CHARLES HENRY ADAMS.
A Dash of Kindness.
New Yoik. Her. .I. That New-
Yorkers are not in too mil. h of a
hurry nil the time to he thoughtful
and kindly was illustrated in Naussati
street when the wind was playing
such havoc with umbrella that a man
with a ta:-e fer statistics counted Just
ten Mown Into wrecks In the spare cf
twenty-live minutes. Just as the di-
verting spectacle was at 11s height a
poor woman wl h a baby snugged up
close to her body (ante down the
street trying to make way against the
wind and still shelter the baby under
a shabby enise for an umbrella. A
particularly fierce blast of wind blew
the umbrella backwards carrying the
baby's cap with It. Instantly one man
bolted from the door of a building to
her aid. two men on the sidewalk
grabbed for the tiny cap and n fourth
started on a Jump ncress the street
to the woman's aid. Two of tho men
put the cap on tie1 baby's head and
another bold tho umbrella over the
mother's bead while they were doing
It. The fourth man put a coin In the
baby's lingers. Then everyone In
sight looked pleased and the traffic
went on its wind blown way.
No False Prophet.
Wlien the so-called open door move-
ment among theatrical managers first
broke loose a prominent manager
who was not a party to that disturb-
ance In commenting on the number
of proposed new theatres remarked:
"One of these days some of them will
be turned into garages." The follow-
ing paragraph from the real estate
column of one of the newspapers
seems to confirm this prediction: "A
piece of property on McKlnley Sipiare
formerly the Lyric Theatre was sold
today. The purchaser will make al-
terations and convert it into an up-to-date
garage."
Pan Angelo The rabbit shipping
season has started here In earnest
nnd the initial consignment of "colton
tails" left San Angelo a few days ago
en route to No v Orleans. About two
thousand carcasses were shipped nnd
they netted tin shippers $2.ri0 per
dozen.
