Canada has had a simile® iaw, to
the deposit bill recently p'«^§^/by
Congress for many yea ft', and thus
far it has worked satisfactorily, and
has protected the people from
losses jtlyrough <lj«tionest savings
banks. - Instead of receiving certifi-
ca'es iff deposits, however, the de-
positor receives a deposit book, upon
the presentation of which at any
poatoflice in the Dominion of Cana-
da he can diaw his interest of with-
draw his deposits up to a ccrtain
amount on demand, the larger pay-
ments requiring a certain number of
days notice at the smaller postoffices
Our Democratic Congress are begin-
ing to legislate in the right direction
There is no reason why the govern
ment should noi have the benefit of
the surplus money and in connection
with the money order department of
the postoffices, the deposit system
can be couducted with but little, ad-
ditional expense.

The dispatches announce the death
of Richard Henry DanA, the poet
and essayist, at Boston, on the 3d
instant. i!
Richard ,Henrv Dana was the
8O11 of Chief Justice Dana, and was
born at Cambridge, Mass., Nov. 17,
1787, consequently he had reached
the ripe age of 93. In 1818-19 he
was associated with Prof. E. T.
Channing in the editorship of the
North" American Review. His po-
ems and political writings were pub-
lished in two volumes in 1850. As
a writer his style is simple and mas-
culine, in nfanner dramatic, not what
is usually termed popular.
The Graphic's special from Wash-
ington on the cipher dispatches in-
vestigation says Tilden's line of de-
fense will be a denial of all knowl-
edge of the dispatches ; that he nev-
er encouraged the use of money, and
refused to allow the use of money or
bribes of any sort in his name. Pel-
ton will swear that he submitted fi-
nancial propositions to Tilden, who
indignantly rejected them. When
they get through investigating the
cipher dispatches, we predict that
Mr. Tilden will show a clean record.
We see from the Fort Smith Ele"
vator, that one Nevil, supposed to be
the murderer of Mr. L. C. West, a
mcrcliant, who kept a store a few
miles west of Hartford, Choctaw
Natioti,.\vas arrested and delivered
by Charlie Wilson, Sheriff in the
Choctaw Nation, to the U. S. Mar-
shal at Fort Smith. West was just
closing his store for the night, when
a shot was fired which killed him al-
most instantly. Nevil was refused
credit during the day, which greatly
exasperated him, and he threatened
revenge.! The evidence against him
is said to be very strong.
Harper's Weekly, in commenting
upon Blaine's onslaught upon the
south says "If the southern states are
honestly, upoiva fair vote of all the
votes, Democratic, there can be no
objection to their 'solidity.'" When
Grant became president nearly all
southern states weie republican.
When he retired, after eight years of
plunder of those southern states by
his appointees, they had become
Democratic. Eight years of his ad-
ministration made them "honestly,
upon a' fair vote of all the
Democratic."
voters,
The old war horses are all getting
back into the Senate. Matt. Car-
penter, from Wisconsin, John A.
Logan, from Illinois, and arrange-
ments have been perfected by which
Christiancy is to take a foreign
mission and Zach. Chandler to suc-
ceed him in the Senate. Roscoe
Conkling goes back from New York,
and Donald Cameron, from Penn-
sylvania. Dan Voorhees goes from
Indiana, Col. Geo. G. Vest from
Missouri* and O. H. Piatt from Con-
necticut. There will be warm times
in the United States Senate for the
next few years.
Mills thinks Grant will be the next
and last President, nnless Hancock
is the next Democratic nominee;
that if Hancock is nominated, and in
his letter of acceptance says if he is
elected President he will be Presi-
dent, whether there is an electoral
commission or not, that he will pro-
bably be electcd, but the race will be
a close one in his opinion. &
Nearly every maii, woman and child
suffers with these dread ailments, chron-
ic constipation, headache, both sick and
nervous, and all the ilia attendant npon
such a condition of the system. There is
a remedw, tollman's Concentratfa White
Sulphur Spring "Water. The evidence of
many of the ntoSt prominent men in the
State attest its virtues', and a remedy is at
hand o( which all may avail themselves.

The Death Bate of
Our country is getting to be fearfully
alarming, the average of life being lessen-
ed every year, without any leasonable
cause, death resulting generally from the
most insignificant origin. At this season
of the year especially, a cold is sucn a
common thing that in the hurr^ of e/ery
day life we are apt to overlook the dan-
gers attending it and often find too late,
that a Fever or Lung trouble has already
set in. Thousands lose their lives in this
way every winter, while had Boschee's
German Syrup been taken, a cure would
have resulted, and a large bill from a
Doctor been avoided. For all diseases of
the Throat and Lungs, Boschee's German
Syrup has proven itself to be the greatest
discovery of its kind in medicine. Every
druggist in this country will tell you of
its wonderful effect. Over 950,000 bot-
tles sold last year without a single failure
