What is really happening in postwar
Japan? A veteran Scouter reports on
three months of extensive travel in that
country, conferring with top leaders in
virtually every walk of life.

I When the trans-oceanic plane
landed at Haneda Airport at 9:15 P.M.
I was met by eight newspaper photog-
raphers, a radio station representative, re-
porters and a thousand Scouts and Scouters
both Japanese and American.
The reception I received and the courtesies
extended are beyond description. It was much
as if I had been an ambassador from a foreign
principality called "Boy Scouts of America."
I he invitation had come from the Boy
Scouts of Japan, and so I found myself in this
half-western, half-oriental land representing
the Boy Scouts of America, on a special mis-
sion to assist the new Association of the Boy
Scouts of Japan in its reactivation.
It was apparent at once that Japan as a
whole is making a remarkable postwar re-
covery. Japan has always been poor, finan-
