SsversI writers have ireo de

of the nstsre of the transactions
noticed can not yet be accepted ss
established by co?Qjetnt obser-
vation they are certainly of an in-
teresting character and reveal a
peculiar phase of bird-life. Dr.
Edmondeon describes regular as-
semblies of crows of the hooded
species " crow courts" they are
called which are held at certain
intervals in the Shetland Isles.
A particular hill or field suitable
for the business is selected bnt
nothing is done till all are ready
and consequently the earlier com-
ers have sometimes to wait for a
day or two till the others arrive..
When all have come the court
opens in a formal manner and the
presumed criniiuals are arraigned
at the bar. A general croaking
and clamor are raised by the as-
sembly and judgment is delivered
apparently by the whole court. As
soon as the sentence is given the
eutire assemblage judges bar-
risters ushers audience and all
fall upon the two or three prison-
ers at the bar and beat them till
they kill thorn." As soon as the
execution is over the court breaks
up and all its members disperse J

It is a condition with which we
now have to deal and not a theo-
ry. The south during Cleveland's
administration has been happy
and prosperous. Its growth has
been little short of marvelous.
New industries have sprung up
everywhere. Mines ' have- been
developed' railroads built laudf
opened immigration successfully
encouraged confidence restored
and law and order have reigned
supreme. Tue color line was be
ing gradually broken down and
all the future seemed full of prom-
ise. It remains to be seen whether
the return of the Republican party
to power will bring with it a re-
newal of the condition of affairs
which existed after tho war. If
not then the enemy must com-
pletely change front; The utter-
ances of its leading men iu every
walk of life public and private
justify the belief that the policy of)
repression will bo revived and
pushed to the last verge of tolera-
tion. The campaign so far as the
Republicans arc concerned has
been of a sectional character.
The bloody shirt has beeu vigor-
ously waved oii every stump; in
Cougress no opportunity to harass
the south has been neglected
even when the subject of taxation
came up for discussion. The Sen-
ate in framing its tariff bill took
care to emphasize its antagonism
to the souih and all that concern-
ed it. It was the deliberate pur-
pose of the Republicans to op-
pose the solid south with a solid
north.
It is natural then' that their
success should be largely attribu-
ted to the position they have
tnkciMu regard to the south. They
are justified in concluding that ar
guments against the south and
abuse of southern people are as
potent with northern voters as
ever and they will not be Blow to
use these weapons agaiu when-
ever occasion offers.
What course then is left open
to the Democratic- party of tho
south i
We nmst wait and see. If it is
shown that the policy at which we
have hinted is to be pursued the
necessity for strict organization
with the Democrats of the south
becomes of paramount importance.
If for no other reason than that of
self protection it is in the highest
degree important that they should
stand together to a mau. Deser-
tion from the ranks must be made
punishable by the severest meth-
ods known to political organiza-
tion. A Sound fies&l Opinion.

An old experienced Wall street
banker remarked in course of con-
versation with a reporter" on one
of our exchanges a few days ago
that "a still tongue was often a
fortune." The idea he wished to
convey was that men who tjilk too
much expose the secrets of their
business. A silent man is gener-
ally the safest adviser; he thinks
before he speaks and weighs weli
his words. Some men are a$i
ready with tlieir opinions as a ban-:
gry man for dinner; all that is re-
quired is the opportunity to air
them. Others are so voluble they
tell all they know about their own
business and their neighbors as
well. Generally you cau take the .
measure of an inveterate talker
as it's wind and froth. On the
other hand the mau who holds big -tongue
is not easily fathomed.
"Still water runs deep" with bnt
little noise and friction while the
shallows foam and fret with ccn-
stant tumult.
As a rule the silent man is me-
thodical painstaking careful. He-
weighs his words and pounds ac-
curately. In business he makes
no fuss or parade ; he transacts it
however with diligence! andpm-
deuce. Brag and vanity sre twins;
together they were born and to-
gether they will die.
Conceit and boasting are poor
elements in trade ; airs put on as
soon as a little money is made usu-
ally have a chill. Boasting of big
profits and a speedy fortune to
every listener shows a lack of
good sense and sound judgment.'
Men have been hung on their own
testimouy and merchants have
failed from too much tongue.
Why shsrcld tho secrets of the
store or counting-room Jse pro-
claimed on th street corner! A
