Shall we have a fair next fall;
It is not too earlv. by any meanj
to discuss this matter.
The People's Party held a Statb
convention at Fort Worth thi
week and adopted a platform.
Texas cattlemen held a meeting
at Austin this week at which there
were nearly two hundred in at-
tendance representing it is said
about 150000.
This is one of the years in which
Texas Democrats should noini
nate their candidates for the vari-
ous offices and then vote tor them
to a man. In this way only can
they be assured of a straight race
with no possibility of a dark
"horse" with long ears getting in
to the crib.
Since we are to have no water
sup pi except from the creeks it
will be in order to insist that the
sewerage or as much of it as pos-
sible should be turned into Cedar
creek below tho waterworks. By
cutting across tho railroad and
continuing the sewers east of
Jones' lumber yard to the north
until they pass into the drain run-
ning northeast and paesiug into
the creek near the slaughter house
at least nine-tenths of the wa6h-
iugs of the city can be gotten rid
of. If the authorities will only in-
veetieate they can soon see wheth-
er it is possible to do this and if
it is it should
be done by all
means.
Dr. Graves Free.
Denver Col. Jan. 29. The Su-
pre me court granted a superse-1
deae in the Graves case and he
will be released on bail as it will
take two years to bring about a
new trial.
The completion of that artesian
well to a pood flow of water
would be worth a million dollars
to Abilene. Shall we. miss our
great opportunity when success is
so nearly achieved ! We hope
not. Those who can see no ad-
vantages are invited to investi
gate at Waco Taylor Dallas Fort
Worth and other points where ai-
tesiau water has been secured
and see what it has done and is
doing for them. And we invite
those who would have you be-
lieve that no flow of water can be
obtained to look east west and
south of us at the successful at-
tempts made and then tell ua why
they think Abilene should be the
only point in the great State of
Texas where water cannot be had.
It is true that we have to go deep-
er for It here than at most of these
other places where wells have
been bored but the flow can be
had all the same and at a less
depth than 2500 feet at that. As
soon as the shale they are now
boring in is passed through the
rock will in all probability be
reached under which lies nature's
great resorvoir. A great majority
of the people of Abilene would
like to have it tapped.
As yet but little has been said
in regard to the race for governor
iu 1892. It would hardly be safe
to predict that Governor Hogg
will be elected to another term
without knowing more about the
sentiment of the people but it
Lean safely be said that he ought
to be re elected to the office next
fall. lie has made a good execu-
tive has met tho expectations of
his friends and done much better
than many of his enemies predict-
ed he would. There is no doubt
but that as good men can be
found but we see no reason why
Governor Hogg should not bo
given a second term as his pre-
decessors have been for a number
l oi yeai
of years past.

of Appeals at Abilene to be estab
lished by the extra session of the
Legislature soon to meet. To the
well-posted and thinking people it
apparent that if one of the Courts
is not now located somewhere in
West Texas is will be but a very
few years until it will bo removed
to this section ; hence wiry not
make the location hero now ? It
is useless for us to take up space
to convince our own people that
Western Texas ought to have one
of these Courts and that Abilene
is the place to locate it but we do
urge our people to get ready and
when the legislature meets go be-
fore it and show wiry this ought to
be done. We ask our brethren of
the West Texas press to help us
stir the people up to the import-
ance of this move. We would also
be glad to hear from our board of
trade on the ways and means to
accomplish the location of this
sfipnxt here.
