HISTORY OF ELLIS OOUNTY.
in life was employed as a cowboy, and after
returning from Utah Territory he engaged in
that business on his own account. During the
war he was detailed by the Government to
haul cotton to Mexico, and after making two
trips he saved enough money to make his first
start after the war. He soon afterward engaged
in freighting, and also bought stock
and drove to Kansas, in which he made considerable
money. In 1868 Mr. Couch engaged
in farming and stock-raising, and the
next year bought an improved farm, where he
was engaged in the cattle business about
three years. He then bought a tract of raw
land, to which he has since added until he
now owns two good farms, having in all 335
acres, about 300 acres of which are under a
fine state of cultivation. In 1883, in partnership
with his brother, he purchased an interest
in a dry-goods store, and is now a
member of the firm of Couch Bros. & Hamlett,
one of the largest dry-goods firms in
Italy, and also the principal cotton buyers of
the town.
Mr. Couch was married in 1868 to Miss
Laura Morris, a daughter of Widow Morris,
a resident of Hood county. Mr. and Mrs.
Couch had one child, Berwis W., born July
14, 1869, who is engaged in the grocery
business in Italy. The wife and mother died
July 17, 1869, and in 1872 Mr. Couch married
Miss Mary Collier, a daughter of Ben
Collier, a native of Georgia. He came to
Texas in 1850, but soon afterward returned
to Georgia, but came again to Texas with his
family in 1866. Mr. and Mrs. Couch had
six children, five of whom are now living:Laura, born July 14, 1873, is at home; Herbert,
born in February, 1874; James C., in
August, 1878; Sally, in September, 1880;
Samuel, in October, 1882. The mother died
in February, 1888, and in February, 1890,
the father married Miss Jennie, a daughter
of John Windom, a native of Alabama, who
died in the army. By the last marriage
there is one child, Elizabeth, born June 15,
1891. Mr. Couch votes with the Democratic
party, and is a member of the Masonic fraternity,
of the Knights of Honor, and both he
and his wife are members of the Christian
Church.
IEWTON PHARISS, a farmer of Ellis
county, was born in Meigs county, Tennessee,
December 9, 1837, a son of
James and Betsey Phariss, natives of Tennessee.
The parents both refugeed to Arkansas,
where they died during the war, the
father August 15, 1864, and the mother October
27 of the same year. They were the
parents of nine children, namely: Sallie,
Letta, Hugh, Winebert, Nancy, Jasper, Sam,
Newton C. and James. One brother, Winebert,
resides in Arkansas; Sallie is also in
Arkansas; and five of the brothers and sisters
died of typhoid fever inside of one month.
Newton Phariss moved with his father's
family to Lawrence county, Missouri, when
two years old, where he grew to manhood
and received his education in the common
schools. In the fall of 1861 he enlisted in
the Confederate service in the Sixteenth Missouri
Cavalry, and after three months wasw
