ings went partly to one of the negro churches and the
organ, as I have said, to the San Marcos Academy.
The building was designed by C. W. Bulger & Son,
architects of Dallas, and Mr. C. W. Bulger personally
supervised the construction.
We watched its growth proudly, and rather impatiently,
admiring each new feature as it came to our
view. And it was with exultation and some excitement
that we viewed the great congregation assembled
during the meeting in Austin of the Texas State Convention
to hear Dr. Geo. Truitt preach the dedication
sermon, March 12, 1911. That was a notable event for
Austin Baptists. The church was far from finished,
but we had come home.
The total original subscriptions to the building fund
amounted to $50,000.00. The furnished building, not
including the organ, cost about $67,500.00. The Committee
has arranged with a financial firm to take up
a note of about $5,000.00 each year, so that the entire
indebtedness should be lifted in 1930. The Kimball
organ, which cost $4,500.00, is at the present writing
entirely paid for.
Conclusion
Such as I have been able to gather it has been the
seventy-five years of the history of the First Baptist
Church of Austin, Texas. In 1847 Austin had less
than 500 people, and there were seven members of the
Baptist organization; in 1922 Austin had about 40,000
people and the white Baptists number near 2400. Then
we were a little over one per cent of the population,
now we are six per cent. Then we had nothing in
property, now our church property is valued at something
like $225,000.00, and our budget is about $18,000.00.
Let us hope that we have grown in the power
that comes from the Spirit of God, and are using our
material equipment for the glory and honor of Him ,
whose name our forefathers organized the original
church.
