Sixty-nine cars of cattle were un-
loaded at the stock pens here this week
forty-one cars of which have been
started up the trail.

This will explain any failure on his

John Medaris offers his livery stable
together with the horses buggies car-
riages etc. for sale in this paper to-

Prof. Ocie Speer began his writing
school last Monday morning in the
North side school building with a good
attendance. Prof. Speer is arfaccom-
plished pensman and those desiring to
improve in their writing would do well
to attend his school.
His name is R. J. McKinney ; his

Texas; his statement May 1889: My

sores and ulcers the result of a gen-
eral breaking down of his health from
fever. He was considered incurable

A few weeks since Mr. W. H. King
shipped one car steers weighing 960
' pounds and sold for $3.30 j four cars
of cows weighing 740 pounds and
sold for $2.20 ; three cars of two-year
old heifers weighing 560 and sold for
$1.90; two cars of yearlings weighing
" 427 pounds sold for $1 65. Onlyfour
days elapsed from the time the cattle
' left here till they were sold m Chicago." At the entertainment at the Hotel
Palace Wednesday night Prof. Lucas
with his violin accompanied by his
little daughter Maud and Mr. Raily
on the horn and Miss Ida Shonkwiler
on the piano rendered several very
fine selections to the great delight of
the "audience Little Maud Lucas
only nine years old displays rare tal-
ent as a musician as she can perform
on almost any instrument The en-
& tire program was well selected and
the evening passed off very pleasantly

The architect of the new public
school building is Mr. H. Hohenschild
of Rolla Mo. who has shown him-
self a very competent business man
and an accommodating gentleman.
J. W. Horner who has been experi-
menting in horticulture at San Angelo
the past eight months passed through
this city yesterday on liis-way-to his
old home at El Paso where he will
reside in future.
During the past week wheat has
been coming in quite lively. Yester-
day some wheat sold as high as 75 cts
The yield is turning out splendidly
the average of that marketed to date
being from 25 to 38 bushels per acre.
At the last meeting of school trus-
tees Mr. J. G. Lowdon was re-elected
treasurer of the school board. Mr.
Lowdon has served several terms in
this capacity and has proved himself a
competent and accommodating official.
Swift's Specific has saved me years
of untold misery by relieving a partial
paralysis in my left side. This was
after I had been treated by best physi-
cians in St. Louis and Chicago. The
trouble was caused by some derange-
ment of my blood which has been
corrected by S S. S.

begin July 22nd and continue fdSr
weeks. Let all teachers in the dis-
trict attend and do all in their power
to make it a grand success. Prof. C.
A. Bryant is a first-class educator a
thorough scholar and a perfect gentle-
man and will endeavor to make the
school a benefit to those attending. 1
B. C. Evans of Ft. Worth was shot
and killed by J. W. Davis on last Sat-
urday. Davis had been in Mr. Evans'
employ for a number of years but was
in the habit of drinking to excess at
times Mr. Evans remonstrated with
him about it till at last he informed
Davis Saturday morning that he could
stand it no longer and that he (Davis)
must begin anew Monday or hunt an-
other place this seemed to enrage
Davis who went out and purchased a
pistol came back and shot Mr. Evans
while the latter was sitting in his office
reading a newspaper. U. C. Evans
was known all over Texas as a liberal
hearted noble man and seemed to
havq been greatly beloved by his em-
ployes He was buried Sunday

in a few days will open a general grain

Walter Jones who has been visiting
in Abilene for several days returned
Jo Toyah Wednesday. Walter has
many friends in Abilene who always
welcome him in their midst.
The trade display is being discussed
again this year and many of our mer-
chants favor this feature very strongly.
It has been suggested that the parade
take place on the opening day of the
fair.
Mr. John King of Jackson Miss.
says that he was cured of rheumatism
in his feet and legs by taking Swift's
Specific. This was after he had tried
many other remedies both internal
and external and paid many doctor's
bills.
The Catholic ladies will give a moon-
light picnic to-night at the residence of
Jno. Hoeny Jr. fromJJs to 11 o'clock.

lemonade and cake will be served
.throughout the evening. Swings
games and amusements will be provi-
ded for the children. Music by the
Abilene Cornet band. All are cordi-

ing the Abilene boys in our city on

Anson Light Weights.
New Uniforms;
Our new band is now negotiating
for new uniforms. The boys want to
get something pretty nice and propose
to raise money to pay for the uniforms
by giving a series of concerts. We
bespeak for them a liberal patronage
as they have made very satisfactory
progress. A good brass band is what
we can have now by giving it a little
mqre encouragement and that is what
our people are sure to do.
Campbell vs. Kilrain.
Immediately after the announce-
ment of the result of the fight between
Sullivan and Kilrain Jake Campbell a
local barber here told some of his
friends that he was willing to meet
Kilrain in the ring. At first it was
thought that Campbell was joking but
he was So serious that he soon con-
vinced a few of the sporting fraternity
that he meant just what he said and
that he would be ready for the fight by
the first week in October. Jake Camp-
bell has fought twice and won both
times. He now weighs 207 pounds
but in fighting condition will tip the'
beam at about 1901 A challenge has
been sent to Richard K. Fox and if it
is accepted Campbell will go in training.

Mr. Andrew Contcgic is still re-
ducing his workmen's wages.
Monroe Miles was killed by lightning
near Paris Texas on July 8th.
Our new band is a daisy and we
hope to see the boys in fine shape for
the fair.
In a fight at Gate City Alabama on
July 7th three men were killed and
four wounded.
Excursion rates on all the railroads
to our next fair will bring us a great
many visitors from abroad.
The second term of Prof. Million's
singing class will begin Monday night
next. Don't dodge the dodger.
Mr. Joe Rushing has moved his fam-
ily to Abilene and will make this
their permanent home hereafter.
Grasshoppers are repoited to have
devastcd portions of Stephens county
and then commenced exterminating
each other.

spinning the goat hair into twine and

The Chicago Tribune says it has
been found that a nickle plated bullet
will go plump through a man while
one that is not nickle plate will stop
short. England will hereafter make
all her bullets nickle plate.
Dr. J.T. Mullen a promintnt young
physician near Birmingham Alabama
was attacked by a man who owed him
a bill. The doctor snatched the gun
from his assailant and broke it over
his head crushing the man's skull.
Among the many propositions con-
sidered in the constitutional conven-
tions of the territories are the follow-
ing :
An absolutely secret ballot election
of U. S. senators by direct vote of the
people minority representations pri
vate detective agencies a single
legislative body. Annual sessions of
legislature and taxation of land held
from use as high as land used.
Some of these adopted as laws
would prove wholesome regulations in
the political world.
