50 ARE BROUGHT OUT ALIVE
All Hope Abandoned for Men Still in Mine and
After Damp Holds Back Rescue Workers;
Three Corpses Lifted to Surface
By Associated Press
LITTLETON ALA. April 8. One hundred und eighteen men most of thorn
negro convicts are entombed tonight In tho Banner coal mine near hero
following a terrific exploslone early today. Tho accident Is the -worst In th
history of tho South for twelve years. Only a miracle can save tho Un-
fortunate blacks nnd their few white companions say men familiar with
tho causes and effects of mine explosions.
AFTKIl DAMP HOLDS 1LVCK KESCUERS.
But three bodies have been brought to tho surface. These were found not
fifty feet from the entrance of the main shaft indicating that the men
were fully rtware of their danger and had made a desperate effort to reach
a point whero human endeavor might Bavc their lives. Tho fatal after damp
has bo far kept the rescuing parties from penetrating in to the mine al-
though they have been far enough to see gruesome piles of human bodies
huddled near tho shaft.
HOPE PRACTICALLY AHATNDONEI).
Officials of the mlno who have taken a leading part In the rescue work
have practically abandoned all hope of saving tho entombed men. Fire was
raging underground and if the victims have not perished from poisonous
gases the flames are believed to have completed tho horrid work ' Attempts
will be made throughout the night however to effect entrance.
. . TAPPINGS HEARD THEN SILENCE.
This afternoon knocks on iron pipes leading to the surface could bo dis-
tinctly heard. This was taken to mean that the entombed men were notify
ing those above ground that they were Btlll alive. Tonight tbero Is an
-ominous silence indicating that all are dead.

175 TRAPPED BY EIRE.
By Associated Press.
BIRMINGHAM ALA. April $. One hundred and seventy-five convicts
were trapped by fife In the Banner mines near Littleton early today. Flames
followed a terrific explosion of gases. It is feared most of them wll perish
-Out of the one hundred and ninety who -went to work this morning twenty
had come out alive shortly before noon. Many of the survivors received
frightful burns and are suffering agonies from having breathed in poisonous
gases.
CONVICTS HIRED FROM STATE.
The Banner mines are In the western part of this county and are owned
by the Pratt Consolidated Company with offices here. -The conyicts are
hired from varlOUB counties throughout the state. It has long been the use
of the Consolidated Company to hire convict labor.
KAMA' INFORMATION IS MEAGER
Early Information from the mine regarding the cause of tho explosion is
very meager. Special trains carrying relief and a mlno "inspector left here
today at nine o'clock Cause of the explosion bad not been ascertained at
One o'clock this afternoon.
RESCl'E WORK MADE DIFFICULT.
Rescue work was made difficult by the' destruction or a fan in shaft No. 2
-It fielng nearly impossible to penetrate the poisonous gaseB and live. The ex-
plosion occurred far Underground It came hctween a Shift of crews and
probably reduced the loss of life. Had the disaster occurred while either
crew had been at work the death list might have mounted to more than one
hundred and fifty.
FIFTY TAKEN FROM MINE ALIVE.
Shortly before two o'clock this afternoon a party of rescue porkers black-
ened with soot and gasping for breath poked their heads out of the main
shaft carrying five victims alive but badly injured.
"Give us men" they shouted hoarsely "more nre below"'and rescue workers
standing about the entrance of the shaft pushed forward. At three o'clock
the rescue work was in full progress at which time fifty men many of them
feared in a dying condition had been brought Into the Bunllght. It is believed
the death list will reach one hundred.
