THE DINING TABLE.
Its Progress From the Time Dagger
' Were Used as Knives.
Tho term "board" applied to our
dining tables is literally exact.
The first dining tables were mere-
ly long boards laid upon trestles re-
movablo when tho meal ended.
Tho boards and treaties used now-
adays at school feasts are' replicas
of the ancient Saxon and Danish
dining boards.
Tho tablecloth itself is a de-
scendant of the covering put over
tho boards not to make it more
ornamental as a carrier of meats
hut for hard uso as a handy means
of wiping tho greasy fingers of the
diners. -
Tho primitive tablecloths wore
not continuous lengths of cloth but
a sort of rough towel laid over tho
boards as a convenience for tho
guests. Tho modern idea of leaving
tho mahogany baro in tho center
and only covering that part of a din-
ing tablo nearest the guests scorns
almost a revival of this old ubo.
" Later tho Saxon spinsters who
wero for tho" most part married
dames took prido in making decent
napery for their boards and they
also produced well spun nnd well
woven short cloths for finger wip-
ing. From the short cloths themselves
direct followers of the tablecloths
camo our present tablo napkins.
About tho time that tho table-
cloth spread into goodly proportions
so as to cover the whole board de-
cently the hoard itself was made a
permanency. In other words ta-
bles took tho place of boards. It
was much moro convenient to hnvo
the board nailed upon four legs and
made firm in place of tho loose ones
hitherto used. So thorcign of the
trestles ceased and that of the table
began.
Tho tablo was a very rough af-
fair atvfirst. Gradually in the courso
of generations it became moro and-
moro refined until it attained to
the polished expanse of fine wood
we know now.
The I rue origin of tho change
from (able cover to napkin for fin-
ger cleansing was the idea of tho
primitive Saxon wives that tho
6mall cloths wore easier to keep
clean than the largo ones.
As luxuries by uso becorao necen-
sities bo the bare boards having
once become covered retained their
covers for ornamentation when
their original uso was diverted.
Tho first knives were tho daggers
of tho warriors. Servitors carried
immense portions of roasted meat
to each guest at tho board. Tho
warrior hacked off what ho wanted
using his hands as well as his short
dagger and cursing tho menial if
the meat Was overhot.
Tho dripping of grease and gravy
upon the earthen rush covered
floors mattered not at all in thoso
days.
i The dagger wa3 superseded iu
noble houses by the uso of a table
sword made somcthincliko a razor
;and kept for the cutting of meat

MAN AND THE DOG.
The Animal le Loved Yet H Name
Serves Fer Insulti.
How is it posfblo that we lovo
dogs so much yoflwhen wo aro an-
gry wo call people dogs r" WJion tho
TurkB Bpcak of us they say wo arc
"Christian dogal" If wo despise a
man wo call him a puppy. If wo
lovo n girl wo call her Bparrow kit-ten-dovc
chicken. Wo say "that
dog of a coward" "that contempti-
blo cur" "that low down yellow
dog" etc. Dog protects man. Ho
livca in man's houso and guards
man's property and life. Vet we
use "dog" always as an insulting
epithet. An offensivo person is as
impudent as a dog! Wo regularly
record tho dog days. The dog has
tho honor of being always in the
heavens in tho constellations of the
great and little dog. Sinus tho
dog star is tho brightest Jf all tho
stars in tho firmament.
Wo make laws for the dog's pro-
tection wo lovo him cherish wash
comb and dress him minister unto
him when ho is ill pay taxed to own
him let him lie in our laps kiss
'him take him to rido in carriages.
Indians and Chinamen cat him.
Yet in all Scripture "dog" is a most
degrading expression. In tho Lcvit-
ical law tho dog was regarded as
unclean in company of tho griffin
tho hare the pig and tho eel. There
is no expression in tho Biblo of the
fidelity love and watchful caro of
the dog. now is it then that wo
so honor tho dog as to use him in
art as a symbol of fidelity nnd af-
fection in women and courage I and
magnanimity in men? New York

An Example of Yankee Shrewdness.
"Talk about Yankee shrewdness"
said tho traveling man. "I was in
a little tavern Up in Connecticut not
long ago and a farmer camo in with
eggs to sell. Tho transaction took
place in tho barroom of the estab-
lishment. The proprietor agreed to
lake two dozen and when tho farm-
er came to count over the contents
of his basket ho found that lie bad
twenty-five eggs. Tho proprietor
wanted the extra egg thrown in foi
good measure. Tho farmer didn't
boo it that way and they argued the
matter. At last the proprietor said
he'd take the twenty-five egg9 give
the man a drink nnd call it square
Tho farmer agreed and pocketed
his money.
"'Now what'll you have?' asked
the proprietor.
"The Yankee farmer was read)
with his reply.
" 'Sherry 'and egg' said ho"
Washington Post.
Tho Mariner's Explanation
A sailor was once asked by a mess
mate not quite so well up in matter-
social as himself to explain to him
tho third figure in a quadrille.
"You first of all heave ahead"
said he "and pass your adversary V
yardarm. Then in a jiffy regain
your berth on tho other tack in the
samo kind of order. Slip along
sharp and lake your station with
your partner in line. Back nnd fill
nnd thon fall on your heel and
bring up with your craft. She tlion
maneuvers ahead off alongside ou.
Then make sail in company w itli her
until nearly astern of the other line
make n stern board cast her oft' to
shift for herself regain your place
.out of tho squadron as best jou
pan nnd let go your anchor"
Such Stuff as Dreams. I
"The faco of my dreams!' h.
cried as ho watched a beautiful
young woman standing in front of
department store window "I nuial
speak to her."
"You huvo dreamed of me'" he
asked in'urprise.
"Yes miss Your faco has haunt-
ed mo for lo these many nights.
May I call?"
"You wtTnt my name and ad-
dress ?"
'If I may bo bold fair one."
"Thcii dream again and iicrhap-
