Tbc Way Not To Do It. .
Every newspaper i8 oxpootod
to Bland np for. its sootion and
so long as it refrains from injua-
tioo to others no ono falls out
with it.
A man named Claridge owns a
paper oallod "Farm Journal"
somowhere formerly in San An
tonio wh6re it had ' 'stock" ks
part of its name hut now we
presume it has its habitat in the
"East TexaB Bresh" and in suph
a "breBhy" looality that its edi-
tor oan see only aoross a vory
small potato patoh.
"Farm Journal" is quoted as
follows :
"There a lot of half -starved
pore white trash orawling out of
East TexaB "bresh" and hiking
Out to West Texas. It would be
a good thing foi; East Texas if
they would never comeJbaok but
they will.
"These people oansoratoh' a

West Texas "dry seotion" if
they hustle from early moratiU
dewey eve six days in the sev-
en." V
There are "dry seotions" in
West Texas where a man oould
not "soratoh out a. living" but
they are a long distance west.
But the ugly portion of the
clipping is the referenoe to the
"pore white raeh" and the fear
that they may return to East
Texas. '
Those of our readers who know
the wide-awake progressive cit-
izens among us who have moved
here from East Texas resent the
imputation and wonder what
manner of man applies such epi-
thets to good people simply be-
cause they choose to select a new
location.

ThiB is an important quoBtion
ono that demands tho most caro-
ful consideration. Wo find tho
final end of the' hog is the pork
barrel. Wheii wo come to this
point in tho hog bUBinoss wo
must lay aside fanoy points and
oolpr. We would want ono of thq
pure breeds and of tho oasy feed-
ing typo if we expeot to oompeto
with tho Northorn farmer. For
tho lagfew ypars the North has
had to raisBi them on higher
prioed feed than for many years.
The growing demand for all kinds
of grain for export makes the
margin yery small in the raising
of pork hogs. The long hard
.winters is another disadvantage
they have to meet. It is true
many are. educated in this line of
farming whiqh is a wonderful
advantage over us. Wo have
today in Texas as good pure-bred
stock as they have. We have
the a&yantage of long Bum-
mers ami mild winters for the
growing and grazing of feed orops
that make Texas an ideal hog-
raising state. There are so many
different kind of orops and they
can be grown so oheaply that I
hardly know whioh to mention
first.
Grass was the first thing God
commanded to grow before He
made tho animal to eat it; this iB
the foundation of the business.
We expeot to show that Texas
can compete with the North in
raising pork hogs. I don't start
out to show you that they oan be
raised on wind and water but I
must say that it takes pure air
and pure water to raise hogSj
Alfalfa has prpven to be the beet
pasture . Bermuda grass is an-
other excellent pasture and when
properly oared for will last near-
ly all summer. I find that a
green sorghum orop is one Of the
best pastures; oats and Nicara-
gua wheat make the best winter
pasture Last winter when ev-
erything else was dead but the
wheat it made good pasture. If
two or three 'hundred pounds of
cotton seed meal were sown per
acre it would be quite an im-
provement. I must say the
rioher the land the better the
pasture. I supppose many ol
you would expect me to mention
peas and rape first but as I ex-
pect to show that pork can be
produced cheaply I will hold
them tjll tho last. There is not
any other crop that will make as
much foed per acre as rape.
With a small amount of grain
hogs make rapid gain. PoA8both
stock and Spanish should bo
used in the raising of ohoap pork
hogs.
If we will fence small pastures
and fields so we oan turn in on
thorn and at the samo time fer-
tilize the orops so as to make
them rioh we can raise pork
hogs at one and a half oonts per
pound this requires close atten-
tion to business. With sows to
bring two litters of piga a year
id whero we must look for oheap
pork hogs. Farm and Ranch.
