NARVRE I'nit 131 Holds
Monthly Meeting
The Smithville Organiza
tion of NAKVRE Unit 131,
held their regular monthly
meeting April 10 at the
Hospitality House, at 7 p.m.
Chaplain Buddy Canada
gave the opening prayer,
followed by the group
pledging Allegiance to the
Flag.
Minutes of the previous
meeting were read by
Secretary Bernice Luck, and
approved. Roll call of officers
followed.
Howard Burns, a can
didate for County Commis
sioner, Precinct 2 was a
guest and was introduced by
President Cliff Ozmun. In his
short talke he gave. Burns
stated he and his family had
dediced he would run again
for re-election as so many of
his friends and residents of
Bastrop County, Precinct 2
had come to him asking him
to run again, as he was
experienced in the jol and
could save the county
money, and there are quite a
few important issues coming
up in the near future that
would take an experienced
commissioner to handle. He
stated his health was good,
he saw no reason he could
not fill the job another term.
Ollie B. Warneke, can
didate for Justice of the
Peace, was introduced and
the announcement made he
had been made a member of
NARVRE Unit 131, as lie is a
railroad man of many years
seniority.
Jessie Lee Scoggins, an
other member, is in St.
Luke's Hospital in Houston,
for open heart surgery. Our
prayers and all good wishes
go with him in this ordeal.
Two birthdays, Mrs.
Vivian Turner and Mrs.
Dora Lee Ozmun, were
acknowledged, and the Unit
sang "Happy Birthday" to
them.
Cliff Ozmun and Myrtle
McMahan were selected as
representative Senior Citi-
zens from NARVRE Unit
131.
Prank Churchill,
NAKVRE Unit 131, Legisla-
tive Representative, gave a
short report; in which he
stated, Mr. Carver, acting
president of National
NARVRE Association, had
advised, that the Widow's
Bill was being held back,
until after the Social
Security Bill has been
funded, to gain more
leverage, to have Widow's
Bill funded in the same
manner.
The bill has been given a
number, but that has been
withheld until ready to vote
on the funding.
Churchill slated that there
had been discussion at
National Headquarters of
doing away with the Office of
Legislative Representative,
but without that officer to
push things through, in
Congress, NARVRE would
be more like a social club,
without a serious purpose,
fighting for the rights of the
retired railroaders. He
stated lie had not heard from
Tower or Pickle; only from
Senator Bent sen.
The meeting was dis
missed with a prayer by
Chaplain Schubert; a social
hour followed in which cake
and coffee were served by
the following hostesses: Mrs.
T.H. Browning, Dora Lee
Ozmun and Edythe Sullivan.

ter of Edwin Zane Gray and

Thank you, Mr. Schmitz.

Oak Hill Report
BY (1.1 B REPOR TER
If you have not taken a
drive to the Oak Hill
Cemetery (in the old Camp
Swift area between Bastrop
and McDade) you should do
so and pay your respects to
your love ones and friends.
You will be happy to see
the bluebonnets and other
wild flowers blooming, in the
picnic area and the fine job
the care taker is doing in the
cemetery.
Keeping the cemetery in
good shape takes many
hours of hard work. As a
result, the Secretary and
Treasury is always happy to
received a donation from any
of you.
We have a memorial fund
in a savings account in
Austin and a working
account in a bank in Bastrop.
Oceassionally, we receive
money from someone and
they designate "this is in
memory of John Doe." This

The purpose of the
