Meanwhile. Mayor James P. Sharp and County Judge Jack

government and protector of the Anglo colonizers.
"Well, if it's owe the $&n

words had cwfjse from none
*her than nsv old iris-ad Ira
Wiggle viaff as be carae
through the Lake Bastrop
Club Pro Shop front dootv his
cap. as usual tossed
careiessiy tm his bead at a
jaunty aagle.
"Welcome back from vaca-
tion. Ir I said.
"Don't change the sub-
ject/ he said, scooping up
the can of Bud that had
automatically been placed on
the counter for him. "You
must have lost 40 pounds sr.
the last couple months."
"About 55." I replied,
sucking in a stall consider
able stomach. Sticking out
my chest in pride 1 pulled the
shirt tight. "See. you can see
my ribs."
Ira crossed his tegs and
seemed to slouch all over the
bar stool, cocked his head in
that way I knew preceded a
smart remark. "You know."
be mused It's gonna be hard
to quit looking for fat jokes
to spring on you."
"Fat's not funny." I
replied.
"I don't know." Ira replied.
"Who was it coined the
phrase Contented as a fat
lady on the commode?
Now. don't thai paint a comic
picture'."*"
It looked like there was no
wav around it. We were
WvX<#KW5'),3,:<K< K,W^M}£-;-K
going to have to explore the
subject of fat. I felt
exceptionally we;, prepared
for the subject, having lost a
k t of weight in t he past few
month* and slating to get
shs for the first time in 30
years. "All right." I said. "I
beaeve fat people are
happier, more well adjusted
people than siim folks. When
a fat person laughs, he
shakes aii over tike a bow !
fail of jell-o. Siim folks laugh
like it ama't even funny."
I watched Ira mull that
over, sacking pensively on
fets beer car. and uncrossing
his legs to get better
purchase and balance for the
debate ahead. "I've
been skinny all my life." he
said "but I've always
wondered if fat people really
were happier and more
contested or just looked that
way. 1 remember when we
were growing up there
always was one fat boy we'd
call lard ass.' It was always
"come on lard ass this and
hurry up lard ass that'
because he always seemed to
be clumsier and slower than
everybody eise and he'd
always just gnn and come
on, always bringing up the
rear, and if he fell down it'd
seem to take forever for him
to get up, so naturally we'd
always try to trip him up
just to watch him roil around
trying to get up."
Ira took a deep breath
after that kmg discourse,
threw ha head back,
quaffing the last of the Bud.
slammed the can down oo
the bar as a signal for a
replacement and looked me
hard in the eye. 1 cast
bebrve fat folks like to take
all that harassment. besr.g
poked fun at. made to look
ridiculous. Yet, looking back
on it. fat people DO seem to
enjoy things more. espe«a
lly food."
Having in my growing up
years been called Sum and
only in the last ten years
getting to the truly fat
category. I didn't believe I
had the psyche of a fat man.
I've always feit slender on
the inside, even though
bulging on the outside As 1
thought over the subject. I
realized that I never
resented being called fat or
reafiy hurt by the many
different kinds of jibes a fat
fellow is heir to. And as !
looked at Ira, trying to think
of a smart rejoinder. I
wondered if other people
with overweight problems
feit as I did Is it worse to be
called fat than to be called
skinny?
Just picture tn your mind
a fat person fallen on the
ground, roiling around in an
effort to get up. In your
mind's eye. isn't he laughing
all the time ' Sure he is He
didn't break any well padded
bones when he fell as the
skinny person more than
likely w oaid. His well-cush

There was a long silence.
br«ken '«!> as Ira popped
another top "Ira," I said,
looking at him seriously as if
I were to pronounce the final
word on the subject. *1
suspect fat jokes are sorta
like Aggie jokes. The
recipients can take the gaff
in «.nde. even with a smile,
because they know m their
hearts that they truly are
superior r"
Incredulity spread over
his slender face "You mean
fat people are superior to
skinny people?"
And Aggies really are
superior to non aggiesT
Ira thought about it.
"Maybe so." he grinned.
"What would the world be
like if we didn't have fatso's
and aggies and Hichard
Ntxocs to kick around**"
Without another word Ira
fished a golf ball out of his
hind pocket and sauntered
over to the storeroom to pick
up his putter I followed suit
and we headed outside to the
putting green. "Dollar aces,
as usual?" he asked
"Yeah," I repbed And I
hop* you didn't spend all
your money on vacation,
'cause I'm broke and
hungry."
He looked up at my
slimmed down body and
grinned. " You do look a little
hungry at that."
I aced the first hole
■We're Growing
With Bastrop
Bastrop County has seen dynamic growth over the past
decade—from a population of 18,000 in 1965 to 32.000
today. LCRA has seen dynamic growth, too. In 1°65. the
year Unit 1 of the Sim Gideon Plant went on line, LCRA
generated more than 1.2 billion kilowatt hours to meet
the needs of its Central Texas service area.
In 1077 LCRA generated more than 3.6 billion kilowatt
hours for its service area. That's three times the power
we were generating in 1965. And roughly halt of that
electric energy came from the three units that now form
the Sim Gideon Plant.
LCRA is here to stav in Bastrop. We have a commit-
ment to this community to serve its needs not only tor
electricity, but also tor North and South Shore park
facilities at Lake Bastrop. And the future will bring
further investment as LCRA and Bastrop share the hope
of one day using power produced by Bastrop lignite
We ll be around as both Bastrop and l.C RA look to a
future of continued growth.
