INCOME TAX RETURNS

There probably were more
since the tax assessor could
not locate every family in so
large a territory.
Of the cattle listed, 239 were
probably in the Morris county
area.
The 1860 tax rolls for Titus
county (present day counties
of Morris, Titus and Franklin)
record 10,286 head of cattle
with an average valuation of
$6.29 each, 2,935 head of
sheep with a average valua-
tion of $4.09, and 2,358 horses
with an average valuation of
$75 each.
There was a tannery operat-
ing in Daingerfield as early as
1855 for processing of leather.
With the outbreak of the
War Between the States, this
industry was expanded to sup-
ply shoes, bridles, saddles and
other leather goods to the
Army as well as to the local
trade.
The census rolls for both
1850 and 1860 list several with
the occupation of saddler, boot
and shoe maker, tanner, team-
ster, stage coach driver and
waggoner, indicating consider-
able local manufacture of lea-
ther goods.

IN MEMORIAM
For Ivy Betts from his wife
and children on what would
have been his 73rd birthday.
You cannot say, you must
not say
That he is dead. He is just
away!
With a cheery smile and a
wave of the hand
He has wandered into an
unknown land
And left us dreaming how
very fair
It needs must be, since he
lingers there:
So think of him faring on,
as dear
In the love of there as the
love of here,
Think of him still as the
same, and say
He is not dead, he is just
awav.
