AUSTIN, July 29.—Senator John
Lee Smith, of Throckmorton, high
man in Saturday's primary for
Lieutenant Governor, issued the
following statement today:
"According to late returns I am
leading Senator Beck by over 35,-
000 votes. This is, of course, very
gratifying to me. I am grateful
to the many loyal friends through-
out Texas who faithfully labored
in my behalf. I had not a single
paid worker. These friends car-
ried my candidacy to the people.
1 trust always to be worthy of
such confidence.
"The recent campaign was one
between gentlemen. All my op-
ponents were excellent and worthy
men. There was no abuaa and no
bitterness.
"In the run-off campaign, I am
sure the same high type of cam-
paign will be conducted. Senator
Beck is my friend and I am sure
our campaign, though strenuous,
will be pleasant."
At 6:30 P. M. July 29, the fig-
ures in the Lieutenant Governor's
race for the two high men were:
John Lee Smith—182,207.
Harold Beck—146,423.

Merchants Must File
List with Loc'il Board
All retail merchants in Cass
County were reminded today by
A. J. Nelson, chairman of the Cass
County War Price and Rationing
Board, that they must lile with the
local board by August 10 a list
showing cost-of-living articles and
their ceiling prices wftich the mer-
chant has auued to his stock Since
July 1. "'ihe filing of such lists
by the tenth oi each month is made
mandatory by General Maximum
Price Regulation No 1," Mr. Nel-
son pointed out.
He also called attention to the
fact that many retail merchants
still have not filed the initial list-
ing of cost-of-living articles and
their ceiling prices, which should
have been in the hands of the Lo-
cal Board not later than July 1.
"Failure to file that list is a
violation of the General Maximum
Price Regulation," Mr. Nelson
said, "and we have been advised
that the state office of Price Ad-
ministration staff is now making
a field survey to determine how
many merchants have not filed this
list."
The results of this survey, he
said, are to be turned over to the
OPA compliance and investigation
uepartment, for immediate atten-
tion.
Any merchant who still has not
obtained a copy of the General
Maximum Price Regulation, or of
Bulletin No. 2—"What Every Re-
tail Merchant Should Know About
the GMPR"—can get copies by
applying to the office of the Cass
County War Price and Rationing
Board, Linden.
Mr. Nelson stressed that com-
pliance with Price Control is an
essential duty in winning the war
"on the Home Front."
Make This" Safe
Driving Test
You can make your tires last
a lot longer with a milk bottle or
drinking glass.
Just set the bottle or glass in
the floor of your car and drive so
that you don't turn it over.
"This device has long been used
as a test of smooth driving," State
Police Director Homer Garrison
said recently. "The person who
tries it will perhaps realize for
the first time just how smoothly
a car can be driven—and how
much wear can be saved on tires,
brakes and clutches.
"But be careful," Garrison warn-
ed, "not to get the bottle or glass
tangled up between your feet and
the clutch and brake pedals."
"Wing Tips" Aids
New Cartoon Feature
Answering everyday questions
about modern American fighting
planes and men in interesting pic-
torial fashion, "Wing Tips," a two-
column art features with an au-
thentic Army Air Forces back-
ground, will be published in the
Citizens Journal, beginning in the
current issue.
The two-column drawings will
answer such questions as these:
(1) Before pulling rip cord, how
fast does an aviator fall after
jumping from his disabled plane?
(2) What role does the sun play
in air battles? (3) If a plane
weighs 10,000 pounds in level
flight, what is its apparent weight
in a steep turn? (4) How many
triggers does a pilot need to fire
four machine guns?
These and many more interest-
ing questions about military avia-
tion will be answered in the series,
all emphasized with completely au-
thentic drawings made at Randolph
Field, America's famous "West
Point of the Air," headquarters of
the Gulf Coast Army Air Forces
Training Center. The training cen-
ter includes forty flight training
schools, instructing aviation cadets
as future pilots, bombardiers, nav-
igators, and gunners.
A new "Wing Tips" feature will
be published in the Citizens Jour-
nal each week.
