THE RUSK CHEROKEEAN, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 23, 194S
Eest Christmas Gift
*Would Be Life Saved
Eighteen merry Texans will die
violently in street and highway
ecklessnew. Five hundred will be
iiirt, many maimed for keeps.
The names of these victims
won't be known until the night
before Christmas. They will come
a surprise like the contents of
a veil-wrapped present.
For next of kin the shocking
m ws will be aggravated by griev-
thought such as, 'this wouldn't
have happened if . . . !"
If you will reflect for a moment,
this is the way it was last Chrisi-
ftnas Eve and every other Christ-
mas since the advent of the reck-
lsss driver and the careless walk-
er. One-half of the dead and
'ftnaimed Will go down in traffic
reports as drinkers. A fourth of
the dead and injured will be walk-
ing .victims, the experts say.
ft' Between the time you got up
Sunday morning until you go to
bed Christmas Eve—provided you
are spared from traffic mishaps—
%>ou will find that 100 of your fel-
low Texans met death and anoth-
er 2,800 were hurt in those two
weeks set aside for Christmas

joy. This is what the experts are
predicting.
Despite the prayerful hopes ex-
press Saturday by the-r uGooeve
nor that Texans practice good
will to men and give to these po-
tential victims the gift of life it-
self, bundle-loaded shoppers will
scurry across crowded streets in
the paths of rushing cars, trucks
■and buses. Drivers will1 speed
homeward with lttle regard for
the dangers ahead.
Gov. Beauford H. Jester and
the Texas Safety Association ask-
ed business and trade groups,
churches and service clubs, col-
leges and schools to feature the
theme of safety in their pre-
Christmas programs. Teach your
children to be alert and take no
chances, parents were urged.
Not one Texan was overlooked
in the invitation to keep this
thought at the top of the shopping

LOST "ATLANTIS" SOUGHT
If he can only find the Ameri-
can pilot who said he spotted the
lost city of Atlantis deep in the
South Atlantic. Egeron Sykes, 53,
is sure he can locate it again thru
underwater radar. Sykes, who has
studied about the lost continent of
ancient lore, for 25 years, has
raised $20,000 in Britain for an
expedition to the Azores Islands
and enlisted the cooperation of
the Portuguese government. The
American pilot, on a wrrtime fer-
ry flight, is reported to have seen
large stone-bloclc, roofless build-
ings under the sea. ''Plato wrote
aboul Atlantis and said hat A'.h-
ens and Atlantis were at war and
both armies were drowned in the
flood when the Continent of At-
lantis disappeared," Sykes points
out. ✓
