THE RUSK CHEROKEEAN, THURSDAY, THURSDAY, MARCH 25, 1918
WRITES AHOUT JACK GUINN
Jack Guinn, who has been
^ known as quite a character around
these parts for any number of
years, dropped by to see me yes-
terday, says Charles E. Green in
• the Austin Statesman. He has
been a favorite of mine for sever-
al years, and to call him a char-
acter seems to me to foe an error
• indeed.
A character is a person who
plays a part. The only part I have
ever seen Jack Guinn play is Jack
6 Guinn.
The reason that I enjoy talking
-with Jack is that he is a sedative
without meaning to be. He does
#not take off into lofty flights as
I sometimes do. Nor is he any
great shakes at psychoanalysis,
an error into which I frequently
0 fall.
Life is simple to him, people
are simple to him, and he never in-
tends to be anything more than
0 a professional spectator in order
to enjoy the game.
Jack maintains that the human
race is motivated by two impuls- j
^es: greed of money and to iden-j
tify yourself with something im- ;
portant.
.Tank; as a spectator, is inter-
ested in neither personally, but
would have one swell time report-
ing these foibles if he could ever
find time and the proper outlet.
"I see things differently from
• other people," he says. And the j
very thought makes him chuckle.
Because he has just thought of j
something funny that occurred at i
• one of Governor Jester's press!
conferences, or the solemn pro- j
nouncements of some public of-
ficial who tells you the time of
P day after looking under the table \
and pledging you to secrecy.
Jack says there is only one I
thing really wrong with the!
^world: people don't and never:
have had a sense of humor. He I
has told me this for so long that j
I have come to believe he formed |
q this opinion shortly after he laid |
aside his baby bottle and decided !
to eat meat and vegetables.
Jack does not hold in very high j
^ esteem either reforms or cru-
sades, although some of his very j
good friends are reformers and j
crusaders. He believes many in
this group ai-e sincere but misled I
persons, and only have to be sub- '
jected to a little growing up pro- j
cess before they too learn what I
he learned when he was learning j
I by a crazy automobile driver or
break your skull falling down in
the foathtub—or get rich. If you
got rich you jfrere just as much a
casualty of the war as the fellow
who got wounded. Because the
rich are always uneasy, thinks
Jack, and develop high blood pres-
sure and ulcers and live in a con-
stant state of uneasiness.
Well, you can see why it is
quite refreshing to talk to Jack
Guinn. He comes in with a chuckle
and leaves with a chuckle. If I
owned this newspaper he 'would
foe working for me if he never
hit a lick of worl% He makes me
laugh at myself when I get over-
ly disturbed.
The facade is the principal

to walk.
Just before we were getting
ready to get into World War II
he came in one day and I told him
I was frustrated. He asked me
why. When I started telling him,
he said write 'em down.
I saw a sly grin on his face as
I struggled over the list. Before
turning it over to Jack I knew
what he meant. He had tricked
me. Many times before he had said
that 95 per cent of all complaints
we had against life were utterly
silly and could not foe substantiat-
ed by intelligent reasoning.
And sure enough my complaints
boiled down to one thing: my own
indecision as to what to do as
concerned the coming war.
"You either get in it or you
don't," he said. "It's that simple."
Jack considered the war then,
as now, a senseless thing. Adolph
Hitler, with a frustrated ego, was
stirring up the Germans to back
him in a world conquest. So what.
If Hitler wasn't doing it, Joe
Blow or Joe Slotz, or anyone else
in a position of importance, would
be trying the same thing.
It was human nature and why
get excited about it, reasoned
Jack. *If you joined the armed
services, you stood a chance of
getting your guts shot out. If you
stayed home you might ffet killed
