Southwest Markets
•Steady To Higher
Most southwest farm products
sold around steady to a little high-
er during the past week, accord-
ing to the Production and Mar-
keting Administration, U. S. De-
partment of Agriculture.
Alternate up and down move-
^ ments left cotton around $1 high-
er. Spot middling 15-16 inch clos-
ed Monday at 34.30 cents per
pound at Dallas.
• Southwest fruit and vegetable
producing areas passed a week of
generally steady to stronger mar-
kets. Increased spinach shipments
# from south Texas sold higher.
Cabbage continued upward in the
Lower Rio Grande Valley, while
carrots and beets remained about
0 steady to firm. First Valley 011-
sons rolled to strong markets.
Colorado potatoes and Louisiana
sweet potatoes changed little in
0 light demand. Hammond, Louisi-
ana, began carlot shipments of
strawberries in a dull market.
Eggs weakened very little last
^ week, as the Easter season ap-
proached, and Monday's markets
held moBtly steady to firm at
around 38 to 40 cents a dozen for
current receipts in the Southwest.
■ Poultry gained some strength last
week and continued firm to high-
er Monday. Heavy hens ranged
mostly from 27 to 30 cents.
^ Widespread strikes of packing
house workers found only half
as' many cattle coming to 12 mid-
■wcs't markets last week as the
6 week 'before and generally fewer
hogs and sheep. However, Texas
and Oklahoma terminals attract-
ed about as many cattle and more
f) hofs and sheep compared to the
previous week's weather-lighten-

ed receipts. Broad demand from
killers, order buyers, and those
packers still able to operate help-
ed offset the effect of strike-
bound plants who were out of the
market, and southwest livestock
prices showed more gains than
losses for the week.
Rather uneven trends prevail-
