ie Mother Carries Her Tribute Next
To Her Heart
fOn this next Sunday, May 9th, the wholo nation will
er in the cnurches and synagoges and in the homes to
ute and honor to the finest and kindest and most
creatures in this uncertain world: The Mothers
Nation. Indeed, it is appropriate that we take this
t out to do our respects to this person who is next to
fjeaus Christ in my way of thinking. Perhaps no other is as
ge to being Holy as is a good, unselfish, kind, and gentle
Jother.
Truly, it can be said that next to God we Americans
bid Our Mothers as the most sacred thing in all this world.
humblest home is' made finer by her presence; the
lallest apartment is made into a kings palace by her touch;
be largest care is soon forgotten in the presence of her
verlasting warm smile and confidence; the badness of man
and the unruliness of our daily life is turned into kindness
and orderliness when we are graced by the warmth of her
everlasting courage; and in the darkest hours when life
ns to be of avail and men are afraid, and the future
ferns''hopelessB^* thoughts of strong and weak men alike
nany many y'nHkirn to their memories of Mother.
I am thinking today of a little old mother in a small
own not too many miles away from here who won't have
^er son with her this day to wear a red rose to signify that
is still living; no, he won't be here to do her honor—
he did an honor to that mother just before his last days
lis earth that will live in her heart, and make her face
with pride every time she thinks of him; and make
come to her eyes each time she looks at this honor,
old lady carries on her person each day a worn,
'c'S'o J? § much used letter which she received from her
^ ^ g r (nths before he sailed overseas and was lust, in
^<orif^ct. She kindly showed me this letter which she
7 from^toer son, and on this Mother's day, I am print-
er you to read: the thoughts of this hero as he prepared
Fs great test of courage and sacrifice on one Mother's
pt, too many years ago:
)ear Mom—Here I am, over 2000 miles away from you
[thisMight in the year 1942 which is set aside for all people
in th«e United States to commemorate as Mother's Day. 1
}wante(* you to .know that my heart stretches out over the
long riles tonight and kisses your dear sweet hands whose
toil hal madp my burdens in life seem as but mere trifles
!in the ptast. There is a spark down deep in mv heart which
(will never be subdued by any force—and that is the spark of
love wnich I hold for von. There will never be another to me
Just like that Wonderful Mother of Mine.
I am listening to the radio, Mom, and they are playing
lat song "Wonderful Mother of Mine", and it made me so
mesick to be .with you. I have your picture before me on
Ibunk and am wishing that lime could fly backwards to
Idays whenf you used to hold me on your knees on my
55cT";ui?l I could hear you singing the lullabys to me
more.
|When I am blue, I seem to hear your voice urging mc
jrd; and when I am forlorn, 1 feel your presence to cheer
^now I'm supposed to be a l>ig boy now— in a lew clays
juate front Flying School and be an officer in the
Jtates Army, but i confess to you; 1 almost cried t<>-
len I received the withered flowers which you picked
fcthir garden and sent me in the last package. You
R-red that Carnations were my favorite flower and
bw them just for me. I could almost see you picking
and I feel the stems where your hands were and I
Jlmost feel you near. They must have been beautiful
you picked them, weren't they? And also. Mother,
|\veet words you wrote—you can rest in the knowledge
I will carry them close to my heart and protect them
I return to your side. 1 am so proud to be your boy,
ImotTier, and to know J hat you feel so deeply for mc. Some-
play. avhen I return, Twill be something great, just for you.
k'ou>are always in my heart, Mother.
I should be ashamed of myself for writing only to you,
|„t I was just listening to the radio here alone in the bar-
Iks and I turned to the Mother's Day Program and the
Ks were so pretty and brought back so many memories
At I just had to write especially to you. Tell Dad that he,
p, hoids a spot in my heart ne*t to yours and that together,
all about take up all the space that exists therein.
Be good and write to me just as often as you possibly
h. i am not flying these days due to bad weather, but am
iing forward to graduation day when I know \ou will
.with pride there at home thinking of my accomplish-
lAbout this flying, its a cinch Mom, don't ever worry
tjute about me, I was made tor Hying and enjoy it
lb—So don't worry—I'll return in the future just be-
]o,i are so wonderful, Mother of Mine.
Your loving son."
Mothers day, I'll wear my red carnation in my
, oniy \'<*r my own mother, but also for this mother
manjjrthousands just like her who are alive and
diis w'fre destroyed in this past conflict. Let us all
k estycially these mothers this Mother's Day.

One-half acre of garden space
is recommended for the average
family. Something should be
planted in the garden every week
in the year and something should
be taken out of the garden to eat
everyday. A garden is profitable
if good soil, good seed and good
fertilizer are used, and insects
controlled.
