San Benito and vicinity chaperoning
a party of ten Brownwood business
men who are going to the Rio Grande
Valley to look over the farming situ
ation with a view to purchasing lands
and probably moving to that section
The party expects to return to Brown
wood the latter part of this week.
Carroll "Wilstjn lias returned to his
place in the ofilce of the American
Railway Express Company after
spending a weekB vacation in Dallas
and other points. Mr. Wilson says he
saw chickens worth $250 each of the
same variety as hiB and he returned

work feeling fine.
Bailey Unable to
Visit Brownwood
Before Primary
Judge E. C. Harrel who Is conduct-
ing the Brown county campaign for
former Senator J. W. Bailey this
morning received a telegram from Mr.
Bailey's: state headquarters announc-
ing that it would be impossible foe him
to visit Brownwood for an address
prior to the first . primary two weeks
hence. His campaign manager stated
however that in event a second prim-
ary is necessary in the race for the
governorship ot Texas Mr. Bailey
would include Brownwood- in his
speaking appointments.
The inability of the former Senator
to visit Brownwood during the present
campaign is disappointing to hosts of
friend$ and admirers here as well .as
the many who are opposing him in the
present campaign.

Dr.lO. N. Mayo city health officer is

engineering in regard ta the drinking
water (of Brownwood that should be of
interest to every citizen "because it
shows! Ithat the water in use at Brown-
wood is pure in all particulars. The
letter 'which is authorized by Dr. C. W.
Goddard State Health Officer is as
follows;
"Dr. !0. N. Mayo "
"Brownwood Texas..'
"Dear Doctor; X herewith advise
you thrit the specimen of water sub-
mitted by you to this department for
'analysis proved upon examination to
be frtee from contamination and td be
safe jand wholesome." The letter is
signeel -by Dr. Goddard and should
therefore put an end to any suggestion
that the water at Brownwood is not
healthful and is free from any kind of
riskio health." " -
Mrs. A. E. Wilson received a letter

Whitehead stating that their niece
Miss Hazel Edwards who was badly
hurt in an automobile accident In San

Jack Rabbits Are Doing
Much Damage to Cotton
Assisted by Grasshoppers
Farmers in Brownwood today report
general prospects in- Brown county as
excellent with only two dangers now
apparent that of Jack rabbits and
grasshoppers with the odds at pres
ent In favor of the rabbits from '
standpoint of destructive capacity
Ten miles south of Brownwood on thJ
Brady road one farmer stated that he
saw as he came to town seveniy-flvt1
acres in cotton or rather had been In
cotton but which. had been eaten to
the ground by the rabbity. Similar
reports come from many other locali-
ties and Just now organized rabbit
drives throughout the county are be-
ing discussed. It will be called to
mind that when the pest was so bad
in Coleman .county a few years ago
farmers organized gun clubs and suc
ceeded iby persistent work in klllin
practically all the rabbits in the in
fested areas. In some localities grass
hoppers are doing a lot of damage but
poisoning on a large scale has started
and it is believed the ravages of the
pest will be stoppBd to large extent.
WANTED Clean cotton rags at The
Bulletin office.
The stockmen's convention and ro
deo program is being worked out with
precision and important announce
ments In this respect will be made'by
Manager AL iF. McAlister within the
next day or so. .
"The management has opened up an
office in the Southland Insurance office
new Jefferson Hotel building on
Brown stet" said Mr. McAlister this
morning and placed Miss Mary Phil
ips in charge for the purpose of reg
storing every available room in
Brownwood. People who have room
that can be utilized for visitors during
the week the rodeo Is In progress or
by the day will please ring telephone
66 and have their rooms registered.
Next week is the time for tho stock
men's convention and rodeo and we
must know quickly Just how many
rooms are going to be available so as
to be able to take care of tho great
crowd that Is sure to be here.
"Another thing I want to- mention'
said Mr. McAlister "Is tho matter of
cleaning up the main streets and cut
ting all the weeds so visitors here may
see that we have a town in keeping
with Itsi well known reputation of
being sanitary and pretty as well as
healthy. I want to take this method
also of thanking the business interests
of Brownwood in making the rodeo the
success that it Ib going to be. Practl
cally every business interest in Brown-
yroqd will be represented and it Is
particularly necessary that they all be
in the big initial parade that is set for
Brownwood Day which is opening day
July 21. I have appointed Bob Prater
Marshal ot the day and he will be In
full charge of the parade. Mr. Prater
assisted me in-the first auction sale I
ever put on in Brownwood and In a
speech on that occasion he made such
a hit among the old-tiniers that I have
decided it would be a capital Idea to
place him in charge of this big event.
"Referring to the clean-up proposi
tion again I will domtt a mower and
team to help in cutting the weeds on
the main streets. This ought to be done
in a day or so previous to the starting
pf the rodeo. I want also to Impress
the merchants and other business
people with the Idea that the town
should decorate as much as possible
for the occasion and this feature
should bo made one of the important
factors because general appearance of
streets through which the big parade
will pass will have a great deal to do
with the success of the films that are
to bo taken of the parade by the movie
man."
