-Brownwood has good reason tor be-
ing proud of its mayor city council.

Paulhan the French aviator has
been temporarily enjoined from using
a flying machine that is said to be an
infringement on the patent of the
Wright Brothers. This injunction
may save thousands- of Texans at
least a ?1.00 each.
H. S. Savage is a candidate for the
legislature from Bell county. He is
ran editor and a poultry expert and
has a record as a citizen that ought
to make him an acceptable candidate
for the people of Bell county.
The Brownwood Commercial Club
could accomplish much more for
Brownwood if it had the fund-? on
which to obtain the publicity that the
town needs. The town has already
practiced too much economy in letting
the world know what it is doing and
- what it needs.
Brownwood is right at the point
-where it needs the united help of ve-
ery citizen In order that the town raav
take on ouse things that go for the
making of a better place. With all
doing their part in every good work
great changes can be brought about
in a short time.
.
. You can be of some help to Brown-
wood by sending away to some friend
.your copy of the Bulletin after you
have read it There Is hardly an is-
sue of the paper that is not of some
value as a publicity medium. There
is no better advertisement for a town
than a good newspaper.
The Bulletin can't take very kindly
to the sentiment for a central bank for
this county because it doesn't enter-
tain the confident hope that such an
Institution would be allowed to be
organized in the interest of the people
but thinks it would be so manipulated
that it would fall Into the hands and
management of the great trusts and
merely give them additional facilities
for exacting unjust toll from the
masses.

The Frisco morning train is falling
Into the most abominable habits and
seldom reaches Brownwood now on
time. The truth is that the Frisco
road bed is in such bad shape from
here to Fort Worth that it is hardly
safe to run a train over It at any-
thing like a reasonable speed and the
trainmen know this and are not try
ing very hard to do it The Frisco
owes it to the public to Improve it3
road and its service.

the Standard Oil company would be

to see the oil flowing there. Further-
more I would be glad to see that old
he-trust magnate John D. Rockefeller
there to receive the oil and would be
glad to see the flames which his ap
pearance would create wrapped snug
ly around him." The only way that
such utterances from Davis are ex-
cused at all is that men of his cnllber
have to resort to such things in order
to attract attention at air ami . they
have to satisfy their Inordinate desire
for notoriety in some way.
THE MAYOR'S PROCLAMATION
Let's be loyal to the mayor. Let's
help him all we can. Let's make his
hobbles our hobbles and endeavor to
make a showing that will count for
something. What is the good of hav- j
Brownwood a deshable city in which
to live.

should one man or a half dozen people
be expected to do the whole thing?
A city is merely a great united corpo-
ration every member of which should
be expected to do his whole duty to
advance the interests of the corpora
tion. The mayor is merely the tem-
porary business manager. -What
would you think of the members of a
private corporation who would stand
back and refuse or fall to do their
part -when called upon by the manager
to do a thing to advance the general
interests of the corporation? Natural-
ly you would think he ought to pull
for the common good or kick clear
over the harness and get out. That
is what the citizenship of Brownwood
should do. Every citizen should pull;
there should he no balkers on the

accomplished If this should be done.

when one comes across a firm boosting

The contest for senator in Missis-

Bulletin editor was in Mississippi a
couple of days last week and talked
to many 'people from different parts
of the state.. The political machine
of the state appears to favor Varde-
man but the masses of the people
oppose him and are for almost any
one to beat him. Among the intel
ligent best citizenship of the state.
Vardeman does not appear to be popu
lar and maintain his prestige in the
state largely by playing upon the lack
of Intelligence among those who do
not study conditions very deeply. He
ranks pretty much with Jeff Davis of
Arkansas Tillman of North Carolina
and others of that type in public esti-
mation as well as in the character of
his hold on the people.
While the public is. not much In

sympathy with the efforts of the trUBts

occupying It as a home or holding it
for a profit. There Is nothing that
so improves a city as shade trees
that is nothing else that costs so
little. A dozen trees or even hair
that number about a piece of property
works a wonderful transformation.
Vacant lots with trees about them are
increased fully ten per cent in value
as soon as the trees start growing. A
home without street trees Is a deso-
late cheerless looking place and
evidences lack of Intere3tin the home
owner. All rental property is also
made more attractive by putting out
trees.
Are you going to respond to the
mayor's call or are you going to
shirk your duty as one member of the
incorporation of Brownwood? Don't
shirk but work. The cost will be
small too trivial to mention.
There is a list of committees ap-
pointed by the mayor but it is not
expected that these committees shall
do all the work though they ought to
meet and issue some kind of. a person
al appeal to the people of the different
wards and every one should gladly
respond. But don't wait for some one
to ask you to do the things you ought
to do. To lag In a public duty Is
about as bad as to shirk that duty.
You owe just as much of an obliga-
tion to Brownwood the town in which
you live as tho mayor a member of
bill passes this year. It can be-done
though it all the places that are ex-
pecting public buildings will busy
themselves at once to sec that-some
thing is clone.
