oafe and Conservative Banking.
Some people think that banks are too particular about accepting security when making loans! We wish to ask this
question. Which bank would you leave your money' with in time of panic or crop failure; the one which demands good
security on its loans or the one that does not demand good security? It is unnecessary to wait for an answer as every
one would promptly say "I want my money in the hands of careful and conservative people who guard well every trans-
action of the bank and especially on its loans for on the bills receivable or notes belonging to the bank rests its solvency'
You cannot do better than to give us your business as we give particular attention to every loan made. With ample
capital and a large surplus'we stand strong among conservative banks. We safe-guard the interests of the bank and our
customers as well. When you want safe and conservative banking methods come and see us for we know your wants
and we want your business.

MADE FIRST SURREY
Brownwood Man Modeled the
French Cut Under Carriage.
MORE THAN 65 YEARS AGO
Was Then at Work for Corli & Law-
rence Carriage Makers at New
Haven Connecticut.
It lias been a long time since
''the first "cut under" carriage or
surrey was introduced into the
United States but it may be in-
teresting to our readers to know
that the first vehiole of this kind
manufactured in the United
States was made by a man who
now liveB in Brownwood. The
"cut under'' carriage was intro-
duced into the United States
some sixty -five years ago when
ourfellowtownsman B. Perkins
was -at work as a carriage maker
for Corlis & Lawrence at New
Haven Conn. and he was the
workman to whom the task of
copying the French model was
assigned. "They are common
now" "said Mr. Perkins this
morning when he called on the
Bulletin "but I tell you it was a
r big undertaking for me when the
foreman of the carriage com-
pany assigned me to the task.
It todk quite a while to complete
the carriage ahd when finally
finished it was the pride of the
shop."
Mr. Perkins gave a little his-
tory of his life saying that he
came to Texas seventy years ago
even before he worked for the
firm that made the first "cut
under" surrey- but that after
spending a few years here he
decided that it was time for him
to find a wife and returned to-
the New England states for that
purpose. He told how he again
came to Texas from Missouri on
horse back. He was a carriage
maker by profession but of
course when he found his way to
Brown county years later he had
to give up the profession be-
cause there were no shops here.
Mr. Perkins will if he lives
until the 31st day of Iarch be
90 years old and he is as spry as
aman at 50. He attributes his
good health to good habits he
being a totil abstainer from the
use of the filthy weed.

St. Valentine Day.
Yesterday was St. Valentine
day and it was observed in the
usual way in Brownwood. It
was a day of joy to the maidens
and children and one of woe to
ttie postoffice departmentier the
rush of work was something out
of the ordinary. Many packages
were handled and while the
postoffice force labored many
hearts were made glad over the
amorous messages.
St. Valentine Day is an ancient
holiday. During the Claudian
persecution in Rome A. D. 270

The oitizena are thoroughly
arouaed over the matter of get-
ting the streets of the city lighted
and there ia muoh disappoint-
ment today over the failure last
night to secure a satisfactory
contract with tho Boysen Light
Co. The town has been in the
dark for so long and there were
such good prospects yesterday
that we were soon to have a ell
lighted oity that the disappoint-
ment is keenly felt. The ques-
tion of a munioipal light plant is
being generally disoussed on the
streets and several men have ex-
pressed a willingness of sub-
scribing to a loan for such a pur-
pose. It is being suggested that
sinoe the city intends to move
the pumpimr station to the dam
near town and it. is necessary to.
keep up power there day and
night that a light plant could be
very economically operated with
the same fuel that run3 the water
works system.
