Good Samaritan Will Help
Many Families This Christmas
A family of four in Garland lost
their house and all its contents in
a fire recently and there was no
insurance to cover the loss. The
Red Cross stepped in to help, but
even that takes time. The imme-
diate aid came from the Good
Samaritan, a center established
by the Garland Ministerial
Alliance.
Right away, the Good Samari-
tan, 1406 Forest Lane, provided
food and clothing, started looking
into possible housing and re-
placement of the family's house-
hold goods.
The Alliance organized the
Good Samaritan in 1982 in order
to provide a central clearing
house to meet food needs of the
many people who called on the
various churches for assistance.
Church members also felt that
the center could provide other
assistance with rent, utilities,
transportation, counseling.
With help from a grant in 1984
Dorothy J. O'Neal came on board
as a full-time director. Since that
time, some 5,000 families in
Garland, Sachse and Rowlett
have received help, and the im-
pact of the program is felt
throughout the metroplex.
The Center serves 1,000 indi-
viduals a month, and this month,
the staff is planning for an addi-
tional 500. Literally tons of food,
clothing and prescriptions are
distributed through this project.
According to O'Neal, "Good
Samaritan i ffers emergency and
temporary necessities and helps
the individual get back on his feet
by, for example, providing clothes
for a job interview. If it's a long
term need, we refer them. But
say for instance, the family is
eligible for food stamps. That
might take two weeks. We serve

"People come here with their
grocery lists. We supply 40 or 50
pounds of groceries to a family of
four for a week. The average from
other agencies is six pounds."
She added: "If your church
has a social function and there
are leftovers, we are more than

City Hall Packed
For Town Hall Meeting
When Santa dropped by Sachse Saturday afternoon, kids lined up with their parents to wait
in the bearded one's lap to whisper Christmas secrets. Here, Joe Wollscheid ponders Santa's age

their turn
old ques-
"Informative" . . . "Very
positive" . . ."Enlightening"
These were some of the com-
ments by Sachse residents in
describing Thursday night's well-
attended Town Hall meeting,
which involved presentations by
City Council members on a vari-
ety of municipal topics and an ex-
tensive question-and-answer
session.
"It was great to have City Hall
packed with involved and con-
cerned citizens. We covered a lot
of subjects and our residents got
to ask the questions they had on
their minds," Mayor Larry Holden
said.
"When you deal with some-
thing as troublesome as our on-
going sewer rate dilemma, I cer-
tainly didn't expect everyone to
leave the meeting completely
happy. But it was evident they left
with a better understanding of the
situation and with some hope for
the near future. That, for me, is
enough reason to have Town Hall
meetings."
Co-presenters, along with the
mayor, were Councilmembers Pat
Longacre and Chris Jacobsen
Besides sewer rates, other
topics discussed were the pro-
posed multi-purpose Community
Center/Town Center Complex,
creation of a new "downtown"
area in Sachse. status of the now
under way Highway 190 project,
purchase of a new fire truck, pro-
gress on Sachse's second water
tower, and creation of an official
city seal.
"I will continue to use the Town
Hall meeting concept to help
keep our citizens informed and
updated on issues that impact
them," explained Mayor Holden.
Another meeting will be an-
nounced in the next month or so.
