Plant An Orchard
This Winter On Farm
Planting an orchard now can
help supplement the future in-
come if properly managed. Why
look around for a new kind of
farm enterprises when a man can
sell all the fruit produced right |
here at home.
January and February is gen-
erally the best time to plant fruit
trees. Trees should be unpacked as
soon as they arrive. If it is impos-
sible to plant them immediately,
they should be "heeled in" by
digging a trench sufficiently wide
and deep ©nough to cover the
roots, reports Truitt Powell, Co.
Agri. Agent.
Deep plowing of the soil should
precede the planting and should
be done in the fall or early winter
The hole where the tree is to be
planted should be deep enough to
accommodate the entire root sys-
tem. It is a good plan to add a
shovel full of leaf mold to each
three shovels of soil, spread the
roots out normally and pack the
soil firmly around the tree.
Trees should be planted 25x25
feet or 30x30 feet, which will give
69 and 48 trees per acre respec-1
tively. Where terraces are needed,
in the field they should be prepar-j
ed some time before the trees are1
planted to allow the soil to settle.
A good method of fertilizing the
orchard is to use 300 pounds of
phosphate or 0-14-7 per acre and
grow a good cover crop of winter
peas or vetch to be turned under
in the spring. In using commer-
cial fertilizer to stimulate growth
in one year trees, use about one
pound of 5-10-5 worked into the
soil within a radius of 18 inches
from the tree. On older trees use:
1 to 2 pounds per inch of diameter |
growth. A good side dressing of
about 1 pound of nitrogen per
tree such as ammonium nitrate
about May 1 to 15th will . sti-l
mulate additional growth and aid
in fruiting.
Cultivation of the orchard is
just as essential as cultivation of
cotton or any other crop and
should receive about 8 or 10 culti-
vation per year. It is not advis-
able to plow deep in the orchard
with a turning plow during the
growing season, but should be
done with a disc or harrow. The
County Agent stresses not plowing
dirt to the tree row as this will
cover the roots too deep.
Several well selected varieties
of peaches that ripen at different
seasons will give you more assur-
ance of a crop of fruit and will
distribute the fruit over a longer
period.
May flower or Early Halehaven
are good varieties for mid May
fruit, Bestmay or Trjogem foi
Early June, Halehaven Radiance
for late June, Jack Bell or Honey
Special for early July, Elberta
and Frank for late July and early
August.
The Agent encourages you to
buy good medium priced one year
trees, for weak runty trees are
expensive at any price.
